INTRODUCTION |
Sydney: Hi everyone, I'm Sydney. |
Albert: And I'm Albert. |
Sydney: And welcome to Must-Know German Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 4. Using Prepositions of Place. |
Sydney: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for giving the location of something. |
PATTERN |
Sydney: For example, |
Sydney: "The pen is on the floor." |
Albert: Der Kugelschreiber ist auf dem Fußboden. |
Albert: [slow] Der Kugelschreiber ist auf dem Fußboden. |
Sydney: The pattern for giving the location of something has four elements. First, the conjugated article for "the", male. |
Albert: Der. |
Sydney: Second, the noun for "pen." |
Albert: Kugelschreiber. |
Sydney: Third, the verb for "to be" conjugated in the present indicative. |
Albert: ist. |
Sydney: And last, the location meaning "on the floor." |
Albert: auf dem Fußboden. |
Sydney: Altogether, we have... "The pen is on the floor." |
Albert: Der Kugelschreiber ist auf dem Fußboden. [slow] Der Kugelschreiber ist auf dem Fußboden. [normal] Der Kugelschreiber ist auf dem Fußboden. |
Sydney: To describe the location of something in German, usually the noun comes in the beginning of a sentence, right after the appropriate article for "the." Then the verb follows, which is in this case the verb for "to be" in its present indicative form. It is then followed by a preposition and a noun to indicate the location of the object. |
Albert: Der Kugelschreiber ist auf dem Fußboden. |
Sydney: So remember, to give the location of something just use a noun, plus the verb "to be", and then conclude with the location by using a preposition and noun. |
Sydney: Here is another example meaning, "The car is in the garage." First, the conjugated article for "the", neuter. |
Albert: Das. |
Sydney: Second, the noun for "car." |
Albert: Auto. |
Sydney: Third, the verb for "to be" conjugated in the present indicative. |
Albert: ist. |
Sydney: And last, the location meaning "in the garage." |
Albert: in der Garage. |
Sydney: Altogether we have... |
Albert: Das Auto ist in der Garage. [slow] Das Auto ist in der Garage. [normal] Das Auto ist in der Garage. |
Sydney: "The car is in the garage." |
[pause] |
Albert: Das Auto ist in der Garage. |
Sydney: How do you say — "My pan is in the kitchen." To give you a hint, "the kitchen" is... |
Albert: die Küche. [slow] die Küche. [normal] die Küche. |
Sydney: "My pan is in the kitchen." |
[pause] |
Albert: Meine Pfanne ist in der Küche. [slow] Meine Pfanne ist in der Küche. [normal] Meine Pfanne ist in der Küche. |
[pause] |
Albert: Meine Pfanne ist in der Küche. |

Sydney: Let's review the sentences from this lesson. I will give you the English equivalent of the phrase and you are responsible for shouting it out loud in German. Here we go. |

Hi Olive,
Good question!👍
The preposition "in" can be used in connection with
dative and accusative. Accusative when describing dynamic situations,
dative for static conditions. "der" is dative.
But I think it is easier with examples:
Ich stehe in der Küche. (static, dative)
Ich gehe in die Küche. (dynamic, accusative)
If you have any further questions, please let us know.
Kind regards,
Reinhard
