INTRODUCTION
Maryssa: Hi everyone, I'm Maryssa.
Albert: And I'm Albert.
Maryssa: And welcome to Must-Know German Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 20. Using the Verb "to like."
Maryssa: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for discussing likes.
PATTERN
Maryssa: For example,
Maryssa: "I like to swim in the swimming pool."
Albert: Ich mag es im Schwimmbad zu schwimmen.
Albert: [slow] Ich mag es im Schwimmbad zu schwimmen.
Maryssa: The pattern for discussing likes has three elements. First, "I like to". Literally, “I like it.”
Albert: Ich mag es.
Maryssa: Second, the complement for "in the swimming pool to".
Albert: im Schwimmbad zu.
Maryssa: Third, the verb for "swimming".
Albert: schwimmen.
Maryssa: Altogether, we have... "I like to swim in the swimming pool."
Albert: Ich mag es im Schwimmbad zu schwimmen. [slow] Ich mag es im Schwimmbad zu schwimmen. [normal] Ich mag es im Schwimmbad zu schwimmen.
Maryssa: To discuss likes in German, you can use the German phrase for "I like it" then write down a complement that describes the thing you like and conclude it with a suitable verb in its infinite form.
Albert: Ich mag es im Schwimmbad zu schwimmen.
Maryssa: So remember to discuss likes in German use the phrase for "I like it" then a suitable complement and conclude it with a verb in the infinite form.
Maryssa: Here is another example meaning, "I like to ride my bicycle to school." First, "I like to". Literally, “I like it.”
Albert: Ich mag es.
Maryssa: Second, the complement for "with the bicycle to school to".
Albert: mit dem Fahrrad zur Schule zu.
Maryssa: Third, the verb for "riding".
Albert: fahren.
Maryssa: Altogether we have...
Albert: Ich mag es mit dem Fahrrad zur Schule zu fahren. [slow] Ich mag es mit dem Fahrrad zur Schule zu fahren. [normal] Ich mag es mit dem Fahrrad zur Schule zu fahren.
Maryssa: "I like to ride my bicycle to school."
[pause]
Albert: Ich mag es mit dem Fahrrad zur Schule zu fahren.
Maryssa: How do you say - "I like to eat bananas every day." To give you a hint, "bananas" is...
Albert: Bananen. [slow] Bananen. [normal] Bananen.
Maryssa: "I like to eat bananas every day."

Albert: Ich mag es jeden Tag Bananen zu essen. [slow] Ich mag es jeden Tag Bananen zu essen. [normal] Ich mag es jeden Tag Bananen zu essen.

Albert: Ich mag es jeden Tag Bananen zu essen.
