leben means "to live" and wohnen means "to live" as in "to reside". So "er lebt" would mean "he is alive" but "er lebt in Deutschland" would mean "he lives in Germany". "Wohnen" can only be used to refer to where your house is. "Er wohnt in Deutschland" (he lives/resides in Germany).
