Dialogue

Lesson Transcript

Do you know how to ask someone to do something in German?
Welcome to Three Step German Practice by GermanPod101.com. In this lesson, you will practice how to politely ask someone to do something in German.
Let's look at the main dialogue.
Two people are having a conversation.
Aron, bitte trink viel Tee und bleib heute im Bett.
"Aron, please drink a lot of tea and stay in bed today."
Alles klar. Soll ich auch Medikamente nehmen?
"All right. Should I also take medication?"
In German, you use the imperative form of a verb when you want to tell someone to do something.
Adding bitte makes the command sound polite, so instead of just saying trink "drink" or bleib "stay," you can say bitte trink or bitte bleib.
This is the form you use when speaking to friends, family, or people you know well.
The imperative is usually shorter than the infinitive, and some verbs change a little, like essen becomes iss or helfen becomes hilf.
With this pattern, Bitte + verb, you can politely ask or tell someone to do something in everyday situations.
Now let's practice using this grammar with some sentences.
