Do you know how to make an invitation in German?
Welcome to Three Step German Practice by GermanPod101.com. In this lesson, you will practice making invitations in German using the phrase Hast du Lust auf…? to ask if someone feels like doing something.
Let's look at the main dialogue.
Two people are having a conversation.
Der Hafen war toll! Hast du Lust auf ein Mittagessen jetzt?
"The harbor was great! Do you feel like having lunch now?"
Ja, sehr gern. Wo sollen wir hingehen?
"Yes, I'd love to. Where should we go?"
In German, we use the pattern Hast du Lust auf + [noun in the accusative]
to invite someone to do something.
It literally means "Do you feel like…?" and is often used for food, drinks, or casual activities.
To use Hast du Lust auf …?, the preposition auf takes the accusative. In the accusative, the noun usually doesn't change—what changes is the article.
Indefinite articles in the accusative are: einen (masculine), eine (feminine), ein (neuter).
For example: einen Kaffee, eine Pizza, ein Eis.
Now let's practice using this grammar with some sentences.
