Dialogue

Lesson Transcript

Do you know how to talk about means of transportation in German?
Welcome to Three Step German Practice by GermanPod101.com. In this lesson, you'll practice how to talk about different means of transportation in German.
Let's look at the main dialogue.
Two people are having a conversation.
Wie fahren wir zum Hafen?
"How do we get to the harbor?"
Ich nehme lieber die U-Bahn. Die Station ist gleich hier.
"I'd rather take the subway. The station is right here."
In German, we use the pattern
Ich nehme lieber + definite article (accusative) + transportation
"I would rather take the (transport)"
to say which type of transportation we prefer.
The word lieber means "rather" and shows preference.
The article changes depending on the gender of the transport noun. Because you are "taking" the transport, the noun is in the accusative case. Der changes to den, but die and das stay the same. That's the rule you need when talking about transportation in German.
That's why we say den Bus instead of der Bus.
Now it's your turn—let's practice with some examples.
