F: German Survival Phrases. Lesson 52, Learn to Say Your Allergies in German.
M: In today’s lesson, we will cover a phrase that will be essential for those of you who have allergies to something. Letting other people know about your allergy is vital to a fun and healthy trip. In today’s phrase, we will go over I am allergic to something. To start, we will need something that we are allergic to. In some cases, allergies to peanuts can be extremely dangerous. So let’s start from there. In German, I am allergic to peanuts is [Ich bin allergisch gegen Erdnüsse] Let’s break it down by syllable [Ich bin allergisch gegen Erdnüsse] Now let’s hear it once again [Ich bin allergisch gegen Erdnüsse] The first word [Ich] means I, personal pronoun for a singular person. Let’s hear it one more time [Ich] This is followed by [bin] which in German means am. It’s the conjugated form of the helping verb [sein] to be. Let’s break down this word and hear it one more time [bin] Then we have [allergisch] which in English is allergic [allergisch] So to recap here, we have [Ich bin allergisch] literally this means I am allergic. Let’s take a look at the next word [gegen] which means to or towards. Let’s break this word down and hear it once again [gegen] this is followed by [Erdnüsse] which means peanuts. [Erdnüsse] It’s the plural form of the noun [Erdnuss] peanut. So altogether we have [Ich bin allergisch gegen Erdnüsse] Literally this means I am allergic to peanuts. Now let’s go over some other common allergies. Let’s try shrimp. The German word for shrimp is [Garnele] So I am allergic to shrimps is, [Ich bin allergisch gegen Garnelen] Let’s break it down by syllable [Ich bin allergisch gegen Garnelen] Now let’s hear it once again [Ich bin allergisch gegen Garnelen] Notice that the only thing that changes here is [Garnelen] in place of [Erdnüsse] while the rest stays the same. Again [Garnelen] is the plural form of the noun [Garnele] shrimp. Let’s try with eggs which in German is [Eier] I am allergic to eggs [Ich bin allergisch gegen Eier] Now we can try it with milk which in German is [Milch] I am allergic to milk is [Ich bin allergisch gegen Milch] I think you figured out how this works. Let’s try another phrase then. In case, you have to go to the doctor or to the hospital during your trip to Germany, you might be asked about your conditions and if you have any allergies, make sure to get the right treatment. In German, do you have any allergies is [Haben Sie irgendwelche Allergien] Let’s break this phrase down by syllable [Haben Sie irgendwelche Allergien] Now let’s hear it again [Haben Sie irgendwelche Allergien] The first word [haben] means have got, plural form of the verb [haben] to have and used in the formal level of speech. Let’s break this down by syllable and hear it once more [haben] Then you have [Sie] which means you. Let’s hear it again [Sie] This is followed by [irgendwelche] which in English is any. [irgendwelche] Finally we have [Allergien] which means allergies. It’s the plural form of the noun [Allergie] allergy. Let’s break down this word and listen to it once again [Allergien] So altogether we have [Haben Sie irgendwelche Allergien] This literally means have you got any allergies. If you are talking to a friend, you can use the informal way of addressing people and ask [Hast du irgendwelche Allergien] Do you have any allergies. The only things that changed are [Hast du] instead of [Haben Sie] is the second singular person form. Let’s break down this word by syllable [Hast du] and hear it one more time [Hast du]. So altogether we have [Hast du irgendwelche Allergien] In German, I am having an allergic reaction is [Ich habe eine allergische Reaktion] Let’s break it down by syllable [Ich habe eine allergische Reaktion] And now let’s hear it once again [Ich habe eine allergische Reaktion] The first two words [Ich habe] are I have [Ich habe] This is followed by [eine] which in English is a, indefinite article for feminine nouns. Then you have [allergische] which means allergic. Let’s break down this word and hear it once more. [allergische] and finally [Reaktion] which in English is reaction [Reaktion] So altogether we have [Ich habe eine allergische Reaktion] Literally this means I have an allergic reaction and we translate it as I am having an allergic reaction. In case you have a severe allergic reaction, remember the past three lessons where we learned how to call the ambulance or how to talk with the doctor about your symptoms. You should also check out the quick tips for this lesson.
Okay to close our today’s lesson, we would like you to practice what you’ve just learned. I will provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you are responsible for shouting it out aloud. You have a few seconds before I give you the answer. So [Viel Glück] which means good luck in German.
I am allergic to peanuts [Ich bin allergisch gegen Erdnüsse] I am allergic to eggs [Ich bin allergisch gegen Eier] I am allergic to milk [Ich bin allergisch gegen Milch] Do you have any allergies [Haben Sie irgendwelche Allergien] Do you have any allergies, informal [Hast du irgendwelche Allergien] I am having an allergic reaction [Ich habe eine allergische Reaktion]
That’s going to do it for today.
