Peter: Now, Becky, let’s talk language learning fears.
Becky: Alright!
Peter: What’s first on the list? What are our listeners terrified of?
Becky: The first one is... “I’m afraid I’m not good enough to start speaking. I freeze up.”
Peter: That’s a really good one. Listeners, do you feel like you’re not good enough to start speaking?
Becky: It’s a pretty common fear... or misconception, I think... that most learners have.
Peter: Here’s how you overcome it.
Becky: Step one - the best way to get good at speaking is to start speaking from day 1.
Peter: So if you’re holding yourself back because you think you’re not good enough...
Becky: ... well, that’s exactly why you’re not good enough.
Peter: You need to open your mouth and start talking!
Becky: Now, that’s easier said than done. Listeners, if you’re wondering what to say....
Peter: ...Here’s step two. In our lessons, you get the exact phrases and scripts...
Becky: ...for introducing yourself, making small talk, ordering food, expressing opinions, and much more!
Peter: So, if you don’t know what to say, the lessons give you the exactly what you need.
Becky: Or step three- Learn with your own teacher with our Premium PLUS plan.
Peter: That’s right, Becky. Listeners, with Premium PLUS, you learn with your own teacher.
Becky: They’ll tell you what to say and how to say it...
Peter: ...so you truly learn to speak like a native! Step four- Talk to yourself.
Becky: Oh yea, I remember you said you used that yourself to get good.
Peter: Yes because sometimes you just don’t have a friend to talk to.
Becky: I thought you had like 3 kids, a wife... and so many friends, Peter!
Peter: We’re talking language learning, Becky.
Becky: Still talking to yourself! Alright! But I think it does work because I tried it after you said that you did it... and it works!
Becky: Fear number two is... “I’m afraid I’ll never be fluent”
Peter: I used to worry about that one too.
Becky: Really?
Peter: Well, only as a beginner. I started learning Japanese first and, it’s funny because the longer I kept at it, the better my Japanese became, and the less worried I was about fluency.
Becky: So, how can our listeners overcome this?
Peter: First, set small, measurable goals. The problem is...fluency is a very big, vague goal.
Becky: That’s true.
Peter: I mean, what is fluency exactly? There are over a million words in the English language and we use about... Becky?
Becky: ...2,000 or so?.
Peter: So listeners...
Becky: ...focus on small, measurable goals.
Peter: Set a goal like... being able to introduce yourself in 5 lines...
Becky: ...Or having a 5-minute conversation.
Peter: Something you can measure so you know you reached it.
Becky: Right, because you can’t measure fluency. It’s a pretty vague goal.
Peter: Also, Becky, it’s just a matter of time. Getting good at a language is simply about putting in the time.
Becky: Right. Listeners, simply put, the longer you stick with learning a language... the better you get.
Peter: And that’s a guarantee. Okay Becky, what’s the third fear?
Becky: The third fear is... “I’m afraid that I’m not making any progress.”
Peter: If you’re afraid you’re not making progress, there are two things you can do right now.
Becky: First, use the dashboard to track your progress. If you need numbers to believe it...
Peter: ...our dashboard tracks your progress. Just take a look at the progress reports and stats.
Becky: Second, try a harder lesson on the site. It sounds crazy and you might not understand it at first...
Peter: ...but you will in minutes. Our lessons come with line-by-line translations...
Becky: ...and the lesson hosts explain everything. Then you’ll be making progress...
Peter: ...because you now understand something you didn’t minutes ago.
Becky: The fourth fear is... “I’m afraid of not understanding anything I hear.”
Peter: This is very common. You hear advanced grammar and vocabulary...
Becky: ...and it goes completely over your head. That’s my biggest fear, Peter.
Peter: To beat this ... if you’re taking an advanced lesson, simply read along.
Becky: Reading along with our line-by-line tool is the best way to instantly understand advanced conversations.
Peter: The translations and scripts are right in front of you.
Becky: Peter, what about in real-life situations?
Peter: Great question! For real-life situations, learn useful phrases like “Can you say it more slowly?,” “Can you use simpler words?” or “I don’t understand what that meant.”
Becky: There’s nothing wrong with saying that you didn’t understand something. Or with asking for help.
Peter: Exactly. And our Survival Phrases lessons cover must-know phrases like this.
Becky: So, these are the top 4 fears. But tell us listeners...
Peter:... what other language learning fears have you had?
Becky: Leave us a comment in the comment section!
Peter: And if you want to finally master your language, now is the chance.
Becky: Get a Monster 28% OFF all Basic or Premium Subscriptions...
Peter: and 2 Free Audiobooks as gifts when you upgrade.

What German learning fears have you had? Are you afraid you're not good enough to speak? Are you freezing up? Let us know!

I got my question answered. Yesterday I saw a woman who was born in Germany but speaks English and German. I am still in the Absolute Beginner Series but I have memorized many sentences from the series which enables me to make up more sentences using the same words. We conversed in German in simple sentences and she complimented me which was an encouragement to me.

Then I reverted to English asking her how I talk to my female dog. She replied that it didn't change because a Hund is a Hund. So I can still say to my dog, "Du bist ein guter Hund."

I had three fears. The first one was that I was afraid of making mistakes when I talked to someone in their native tongue. The second one was that I couldn't understand a lot of what others were saying and if they talked to me in their native tongue, I would have to answer them in their language, which goes back to my first fear of making mistakes.

My third and most recent fear was asking questions in the comment section about things I did not know in the foreign languages I am studying. I sort of figured I was the only one who didn't know anything and I didn't want to expose myself.

I no longer have the second and third fears. I now ask the person to repeat what I didn't understand. I also ask questions in the comments about things I don't understand or I ask a person who lives in my community to help me.

However, I find that if the person I am speaking with is bilingual, it is much easier for me to speak English. So I have to force myself to speak in the new languages I am learning. Therefore I am still working on the first fear.

Thank you GermanPod101 for being here for me.

Ich spreche mit meinen Hund.

Ich habe eine Frage. Ich sage "Du bist ein guter Hund." Wie sage ich wann ich habe eine "FEMALE DOG"?

(I talk to my dog.

I have a question. I say "You are a good dog." How do I say it when I have a female dog?)
