Lesson Transcript

Hello, and welcome to the Culture File: Germany series at GermanPod101.com. In this series, we’re exploring essential information about Germany, German culture and German people. I’m Eric, and you're listening to Season 1, Lesson 3 - German Traditional Costume.
Often, clothing is a large part of a nation’s tradition, and each country tends to have traditional clothing. For example, Japan has the kimono and India the sari. These traditional clothes are called Tracht in German. But what constitutes German traditional clothing, or Tracht? It's hard to say, since different tracht is considered traditional depending on the region of the country.
But if we're talking about the most well known style of German traditional clothing, many would say it's Bavarian clothing. Bavarian, or bayerisch, traditional attire is of course different for men and women. Women wear an outfit called Dirndl. Under the Bavarian dress they wear a white low-cut blouse, and over the dress they wear an apron. With the apron, or Schürze, how you tie the ribbon is important. If you tie a bow or Schleife on the right-hand side, it means that you're in a relationship, engaged, or married. If you tie it on the left side, it means you're still available.
So listeners, how did you like this lesson? Did you learn anything interesting?

Hi Prem,

That's a good point.

Talking about Bavarian traditional clothing it would be

the "Lederhose", I guess, and of course they come in a

long and a short version.

Thank you.

If you have any further questions, please let us know.

Kind regards,

Reinhard

Thank you.

Hi Joe,

Thanks for your feedback.

You are right: formal wear doesn't exactly fall into traditional clothing.

On the other hand, if you had asked my dad, he would have told you

that denims are a traditional American piece of clothing.😄

If you have any questions, please let us know.

Kind regards,

Reinhard

Hi Team!

Guten Tag!

Wełl, here in the United States, I'm not

realły aware of any type of regional costume.

The only type of distinction I see. . . and not a regiońal one. . . is between casual and formal wear ! ! !

Well, in my country (Mexico), we have at least one traditional Costume per state, and we are 32 states.

Most populars are the ones from Jalisco, Veracruz and Chiapas.
