INTRODUCTION
Chuck: Upper-Beginner Season 2 Lesson 14 - What an awesome German movie!
Judith: Hello everyone, I`m Judith and welcome to GermanPod101.com.
Chuck: With us you`ll learn so speak German with fun and effective lessons.
Judith: We also provide you with cultural insights.
Chuck: And tips you won`t find in an textbook. In this lesson, you’ll learn how to comment on movies in German.
Judith: This conversation takes place at a cinema, in Berlin.
Chuck: The conversation is between Paul, Peter and Angelina.
Judith: The speakers are classmates, therefore they’ll be speaking informal German.
Chuck: Let`s listen to the conversation.
DIALOGUE
Paul: Also, welchen Film suchst du uns aus, Angelina?
Paul: Ich sehe schon, du willst unbedingt diesen Film gucken. Dann lass uns Karten kaufen.
Peter: Paul, hast du noch von deiner Freundin gehört? Kommt sie?
Paul: Nein, sie hat sich nicht gemeldet. Es ist vielleicht auch besser so.
Judith: Now it`s slowly.
Paul: Also, welchen Film suchst du uns aus, Angelina?
Paul: Ich sehe schon, du willst unbedingt diesen Film gucken. Dann lass uns Karten kaufen.
Peter: Paul, hast du noch von deiner Freundin gehört? Kommt sie?
Paul: Nein, sie hat sich nicht gemeldet. Es ist vielleicht auch besser so.
Judith: Now with the translation.
Paul: Also, welchen Film suchst du uns aus, Angelina?
Paul: So, which film are you looking for, Angelina?
Angelina: Hmm, ich weiß nicht. Sie klingen alle nicht so toll, und den einzigen guten Film habe ich schon gesehen. Wahrscheinlich wäre "Transformers 4" am besten.
Angelina: Hmm, I don't know. They all don't sound so great, and I've already seen the only good film. "Transformers 4" would probably be best.
Paul: Wirklich?
Paul: Really?
Peter: Ich habe gehört, dass die Schauspieler in diesem Film sehr schlecht sind.
Peter: I heard that the actors in this film are very bad.
Angelina: Na ja, ich glaube kaum, dass "American Pie 3" oder "Der Letzte Kampf 2" interessanter wären...
Angelina: Well, I don't believe that "American Pie 3" or "Battlefield Earth 2" would be more interesting...
Paul: Stimmt, aber ich habe den letzten Teil von "Transformers" schon gesehen und er war schrecklich. Mit jeder Fortsetzung wird "Transformers" schlechter. Die Handlung ist voller Löcher. Der ganze Film besteht eigentlich nur aus Actionszenen.
Paul: Right, but I've already seen the previous part of "Transformers" and it was horrible. "Transformers" gets worse with every sequel. The plot is full of holes. The whole film basically consists of action scenes.
Angelina: Na, hoffentlich ist dieser Teil besser.
Angelina: Well, hopefully this part is better.
Paul: Ich sehe schon, du willst unbedingt diesen Film gucken. Dann lass uns Karten kaufen.
Paul: I already see, that you definitely want to watch this movie. Then, let's buy tickets.
Peter: Paul, hast du noch von deiner Freundin gehört? Kommt sie?
Peter: Paul, have you heard from your friend? Is she coming?
Paul: Nein, sie hat sich nicht gemeldet. Es ist vielleicht auch besser so.
Paul: No, she hasn't contacted me. It's maybe better that way.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Judith: Ok. Now let’s talk about movies.
Chuck: Sounds good.
Judith: I have some favorites and I think you do too, so how do we share some good German movies with our listeners?
Chuck: You absolutely have to see Transformers [Vier].
Judith: No, I don’t think so because it doesn’t exist. Some entertaining movies. Well, how about [Lola rennt]?
Chuck: Yes, Run, Lola, Run you should be able to even find in the States. Very popular.
Judith: And then [Good Bye Lenin!]. This is a hilarious movie about east Germany.
Chuck: And one movie I particularly like is Viktor Vogel, Commercial Man, about a kid just out of college that runs into a marketing agency and ends up getting a job. Pretty funny.
Judith: A really, really funny and very popular German movie is [Der Schuh der Manitu]. It’s a good movie to watch because it’s like really one of the top grossing German movies, but it’s also quite difficult because the actors often speak dialect for comedic effect so you should have the German subtitles, please.
Chuck: But do you only like comedy movies?
Judith: I mean there are some good series movies as well. For one, of course, [Der Untergang].
Chuck: The Downfall.
Judith: Yeah, that’s a very, very popular German movie to be released recently.
Chuck: It’s about the last weeks of Hitler.
Judith: Yes, a very serious movie.
Chuck: And one psychological movie that I think is particularly interesting is [Das Experiment].
Judith: Yes, about the Stanford prison experiment. It’s wow.
Chuck: Yeah, I don’t recommend going to sleep right after watching that.
Judith: Yeah, I definitely recommend watching it. Now, if you have your own favorites or you want to comment about these movies, then go to the GermanPod101.com forum. We have a thread just dedicated to German movies where you’ll find a lot more recommendations.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Chuck: Let’s have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Judith: The first word we'll look at is [Sehen]. It is one of the verbs where the perfect tense does not match our simple recipe. The participle is [gesehen] not [gesieht]. Generally, the recipe for vowel-changing verbs is GE plus infinitive, not GE plus third person singular. So it’s the same for [Geben, gegeben, sehen, gesehen], all these words, [Fahren, gefahren]. Then we should look at the expression [Sein].
Chuck: This means “to be full of”.
Judith: Note the extra ER on [Voller]. This ending can’t be explained.

Lesson focus

Chuck: The focus of this lesson are basic comparisons.
Judith: To say that something is nicer, bigger, better or the like in German, add ER to any adjective.
Chuck: English has a similar rule, except in English you sometimes have to add “more” instead. For example, for the word beautiful it’s impossible to say “beautifuler”, you have to say “more beautiful”.
Judith: In German it’s not possible to use [Mehr], you have to use ER. [Interessanter, schöner, wunderschöner] and so on, no matter how long the word is, it’s always ER.
Chuck: That makes German even easier than English in this regard. So how do you make a comparative sentence?
Judith: Well, you could say like [Köln ist schöner als Düsseldorf].
Chuck: “Cologne is nicer than Dusseldorf.” Isn’t that a bit mean to say?
Judith: Ok, [Köln ist weniger schön als Düsseldorf].
Chuck: “Cologne is less nice than Dusseldorf.” Well, let’s be fair about this completely.
Judith: [Düsseldorf und Köln sind genauso schön]
Chuck: Dusseldorf and Cologne are equally nice.
Judith: There are a few irregular comparison forms. For example, [Gut] changes to [Besser].
Chuck: Better.
Judith: And [Best] is [Am besten] in German.
Chuck: Additionally, adjectives still change according to gender, number and case of the accompanying noun. We cover this topic later though. This is just a first overview.
