INTRODUCTION
Chuck: Chuck here, Upper-Beginner Season 2 Lesson 13 - Please leave a message in German. Hello, and welcome back to GermanPod101.com. The fastest, easiest and most fun way to learn German. I`m joined in the studio by.
Judith: Hello everyone, Judith here.
Chuck: In this lesson you’ll learn how to deal with answering machines in German.
Judith: This conversation takes place on the phone.
Chuck: The conversation is between Paul and Sandra’s answering machine.
Judith: The speakers are friends but the answering machine’s message is for strangers, hence the message will use formal German and then Paul will leave a message in informal German.
Chuck: Let`s listen to the conversation.
DIALOGUE
Sandra: Hallo!
Paul: Wenn ja, dann rufe mich bitte schnell zurück.
Judith: Now it’s slowly.
Sandra: Hallo! Dies ist der Anschluss von Sandra Käufer. Ich bin leider gerade nicht zu Hause, oder vielleicht möchte ich gerade nicht ans Telefon gehen.
Sandra: Sie wissen schon, wie es geht. Hinterlassen Sie eine Nachricht und ich rufe Sie dann später zurück.
(Piep!)

Judith: Now with the translation.
Sandra: Hallo! Dies ist der Anschluss von Sandra Käufer. Ich bin leider gerade nicht zu Hause, oder vielleicht möchte ich gerade nicht ans Telefon gehen.
Sandra: Hello! This is Sandra Käufer's line. I'm unfortunately not at home, or perhaps I would not like to go on the phone.
Sandra: Sie wissen schon, wie es geht. Hinterlassen Sie eine Nachricht und ich rufe Sie dann später zurück.
(Piep!)
Sandra: You know already how it does. Leave a message and I'll call you back later.
(Beep!)
Paul: Hallo Sandra, hier ist Paul. Ein paar Freunde und ich wollen heute Abend zusammen ins Kino gehen.
Paul: Hi Sandra, here is Paul. A couple of friends and I want to go to the movies together tonight.
Paul: Wir wissen noch nicht genau, welchen Film wir uns anschauen werden, aber auf jeden Fall keinen Horrorfilm.
Paul: We still don't know exactly what film we would like to see, but it will certainly not be a horror film.
Paul: Ich weiß, dass es sehr kurzfristig ist, aber willst du auch mitkommen? Es ist ja bei dir fast vor der Tür.
Paul: I know it's short notice, but do you want to come along? It's really almost in front of your door.
Paul: Wenn ja, dann rufe mich bitte schnell zurück. Wir werden gegen 19 Uhr im Sony-Center am Potsdamer Platz sein. Vielleicht schauen wir uns auch erst einen Film um acht an.
Paul: If yes, then please call me back quickly. We will be in the Sony Center at Potsdamer Platz at 7 pm.
Paul: Gib einfach Bescheid, wenn du Lust hast. Ansonsten gehe ich davon aus, dass du nicht kommst.
Paul: Let us know, if you're interested. Otherwise I will assume that you're not coming.
Paul: Hoffentlich bis gleich!
Paul: Hope to see you soon!
Angelina: Und? Kommt deine Freundin?
Angelina: And? Is your friend coming?
Paul: Wahrscheinlich nicht. Sie war nicht zu Hause. Ich habe eine Nachricht hinterlassen. Sie wird mich anrufen, wenn sie doch mitkommt.
Paul: Probably not. She wasn't home. I left a message. She will call me, if she's coming along.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Judith: I think today is a good time to be talking about phone messages. You know, if you’re calling someone in Germany and they’re not there, if you’re lucky you’ll get an answering machine. But there may also be other messages that you’re less prepared for.
Chuck: Or if you’re unlucky, you won’t even get an answering machine, cause answering machines aren’t nearly as common in Germany as they are in the States, for example.
Judith: Now let’s look at some automated messages. If you dialed the wrong number and the number wasn’t assigned to anyone, you will hear [Kein Anschluss unter dieser Nummer].
Chuck: Literally that means “No connection under this number”.
Judith: [Kein Anschluss unter dieser Nummer] Then if you tried to call someone who is at the moment calling someone else, you will hear the busy signal and or, maybe, instead of the message [Der Anschluss ist zur Zeit besetzt].
Chuck: Literally, “The connection is occupied at this time”.
Judith: [Der Anschluss ist Zurzeit besetzt] Then if you called a cellphone and the person has switched it off or if there’s a disruption in the net, you will hear [Der gewünschte Gesprächspartner ist zur Zeit nicht erreichbar].
Chuck: Literally, “The desired conversation partner is not reachable at this time”.
Judith: [Der gewünschte Gesprächspartner ist zur Zeit nicht erreichbar].
Chuck: Those phrases can be really useful cause otherwise you have to call the number again and ask a German friend to tell you what they’re saying.
Judith: [Umm]
VOCAB LIST
Chuck: Let`s take a look at the vocabulary for this lesson.
Chuck: The first word we shall see is.
Judith: “Anschluss”
Chuck: “Connection”, “junction”, “interface” or “phoneline”.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Chuck: Let’s take a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Judith: The first phrase we'll look at is [Ans Telefon gehen]. This is the same as saying [An das Telefon gehen] because [Ans] is a colloquial connection.
Chuck: To pick up the phone.
Judith: Then [Vor der Tür].
Chuck: In front of the door.
Judith: But that’s only the literal meaning. Figuratively it means “really close by”, this is how it was used in the dialogue. The cinema is not in front of her door, but it’s really close by. Ok, and lastly [Hoffentlich bis gleich].
Chuck: Hopefully I’ll see you very soon.
Judith: This is something you say instead of saying “goodbye”. You say [Bis gleich] or you can say [Hoffentlich bis gleich].

Lesson focus

Chuck: The focus of this lesson is [Wissen].
Judith: [Wissen]
Chuck: To know.
Judith: Is an irregular German verb. In this lesson’s dialogue you have encountered several forms of it. Such as [Wir wissen] and [Man weiß].
Chuck: All singular forms of the verb “Wissen” are based on [Weiß] instead of the expected [Wiss]. The plural form is irregular.
Judith: This mirrors verbs like [Können, müssen] and the like.
Chuck: Could you give us the complete conjugation?
Judith: Of course. [Ich weiß]
Chuck: I know.
Judith: [Du weißt]
Chuck: You know.
Judith: [Er weiß]
Chuck: He knows.
Judith: [Wir wissen]
Chuck: We know.
Judith: “Ihr wisst”
Chuck: You all know.
Judith: Sie wissen.
Chuck: They know.
