Jason: Top 25 German Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 25: How much is this? in German (In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for German learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.)
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question How much is this? In German this is
Rilana: Wieviel kostet das?
The first word in the question is
Rilana: wieviel
Jason: meaning how much in English.
Rilana: (Slow, by syllable) wieviel
Jason: Listen again and repeat.
Rilana: wieviel
{Pause}
Jason: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Rilana: kostet
Jason: meaning cost.
Rilana: (Slow, by syllable) kostet
Jason: Now repeat.
Rilana: kostet

Listen to the the first 2 words of the question and repeat.

Jason: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace 10 Euro. Say It's 15 euro.

Jason: To expand on the pattern, replace 15 euro with 50 euro.

Jason: Now imagine it's 15 euro Respond to the question.
Rilana: Wieviel kostet das? (five seconds) Es kostet 15 Euro.
Jason: Imagine it's 50 euro. . Answer the speaker's question.
Rilana: Wieviel kostet das? (five seconds) Es kostet 50 Euro.
Jason: Now imagine it's 1000 euro. Respond to the question.
Rilana: Wieviel kostet das? (five seconds) Es kostet 1000 Euro.
Jason: You want to learn how much something is. Ask the question

@Stuart: There is no particular reason. Just two versions of the English "why"!:wink:

But you can also ask "Weshalb", "Warum" or "Wieso"! Most common is the "Warum" though.

This is a bit of a tricky question, really, because there has been a "Rechtschreibreform" in German, meaning the way we spell words was changed about 20 years ago, and then changed back and forth. The current correct way of spelling it is "wie viel". We have updated the notes.

On the lesson materials, its written like this.


Wieviel kostet das? So we see, Wie and viel together.


But on the quiz section. When you ask how much and I wrote wieviel. But It was false.Correct answer was like this.
