Jason: Top 25 German Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 21: Are you hungry? in German (In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for German learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.)
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question Are you hungry? In German this is
Rilana: Hast du Hunger?
The first word in the question is
Rilana: hast
Jason: meaning have in English.
Rilana: (Slow, by syllable) hast
Jason: Listen again and repeat.
Rilana: hast
{Pause}
Jason: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Rilana: du
Jason: meaning you.
Rilana: (Slow, by syllable) du
Jason: Now repeat.
Rilana: du
{Pause}
Listen to the the first 2 words of the question and repeat.
Rilana: hast du
{pause}
And after that
Rilana: Hunger
Jason: meaning hunger.
Rilana: (Slow, by syllable) Hunger
Jason: Now repeat.

To say "no", in a simple way, just say:
Rilana: Nein, danke.
Jason: Which is like saying No, thanks. in English. Let's hear it slowly.
Rilana: (Slowly) Nein, danke.
Jason: And one more time at normal speed:
Rilana: Nein, danke.
Jason: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word:
Rilana: ja
Jason: meaning yes.
Rilana: (Slow, by syllable) ja
Jason: Now repeat
Rilana: ja
{Pause}
Jason: And after that
Rilana: ich
meaning I.
Rilana: (Slow, by syllable) ich
Jason:Now repeat.
Rilana: ich

Jason: Next is
Rilana: habe
meaning have.
Rilana: (Slow, by syllable) habe

Jason: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace a little. Say Yes, I'm quite hungry.

Jason: To expand on the pattern, replace quite with really.

Rilana: (slow) großen (regular) großen
Jason: Listen to the phrase again, this time with really

Jason: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace the {lang} for quite. Say Yes, I'm really hungry.

Jason: To expand on the pattern, replace really with very.

Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you are visiting Germany and a someone asks you if you're hungry. You want to answer Yes, I'm a little hungry.. Respond to the question.
Rilana: Hast du Hunger? (five seconds) Ja, ich habe ein bisschen Hunger.
Jason: Now you want to say Yes, I'm quite hungry. Respond to the question.
Rilana: Hast du Hunger? (five seconds) Ja, ich habe ziemlichen Hunger.
Jason: You want to say Yes, I'm really hungry.. . Answer the speaker's question.
Rilana: Hast du Hunger? (five seconds) Ja, ich habe großen Hunger.
Jason: You want to say Yes, I'm very hungry.. Respond to the question.
Rilana: Hast du Hunger? (five seconds) Ja, ich habe sehr Hunger.
Jason: You want to ask someone if they are hungry. Ask the question
(5 seconds)
Rilana: Hast du Hunger?

Jason: Now it's time to answer the question with actual information about yourself.

Welche Zutaten sind auf meiner Lieblingsgemüsepizza? Die Zutaten sind Käse, Tomate, Zwiebel, Paprikaschote, schwarze Oliven, Champignon und Tomatensoße. Sie ist lecker und dazu auch noch gesund.

In the last sentence you use "Sie" (she) as you refer to "die Pizza" which is female noun. ..."und auch gesund" is also ok, but to emphasize on the healthy point it is advisable to say "dazu auch noch gesund" (it is even healthy).

"groß" means big and "wirklich" means "really". However, in this context you can say both "Ich habe wirklich Hunger" and "Ich habe großen Hunger." Both would be translated as "I am really hungry" or "I am very hungry" in English.
