F: German Survival Phrases. Lesson 54, Avoid Getting Caught in the Rain with Weather Vocabulary.
M: Whether or not the weather will cooperate is an important issue on which many plans are made and canceled. It can happen sometimes that you are planning a long trip and you want to be sure that your walks and your tours around German cities will be safe and dry. In this lesson, we will cover a phrase that will help you finalize your plans if they depend on the weather. In German, what will the weather be tomorrow is, [Wie wird das Wetter morgen] Let’s break it down by syllable [Wie wird das Wetter morgen]. Now let’s see it once again [Wie wird das Wetter morgen] The first word [Wie] means how or what. Let’s hear this word one more time [Wie] This is followed by [wird] which in English is, will be. It’s the future of the verb [sein] to be. Let’s break this one down and hear it one more time [wird] Then you have [das] the, article for neutral nouns [das] Next is the word [Wetter] which in English is weather. [Wetter] Finally you have [heute] which means today. Let’s break it down by syllable and hear it one more time [heute] So altogether we have [Wie wird das Wetter heute] Literally this means, what will be the weather today and it has to be translated as, what will the weather be today. Let’s go to the possible answers. In German, it will rain is [Es wird regnen] Let’s break it down by syllable [Es wird regnen] It will snow is [Es wird schneien] Let’s break down this phrase by syllable [Es wird schneien] It will be sunny [Es wird sonnig] Let’s break it down by syllable [Es wird sonnig] And now let’s hear it once again [Es wird sonnig] The first word [Es] means it. Let’s hear it one more time [Es] and this is followed by [wird] which means will be [wird] Finally we have [sonnig] which is German for sunny. Let’s break it down by syllable and listen to it one more time [sonnig] So altogether we have [Es wird sonnig] which literally means it will be sunny, it will be windy is [Es wird windig] Let’s break it down by syllable [Es wird windig] Now let’s hear it once again [Es wird windig] The first two words [Es wird] mean it will be [Es wird] and [Es wird] The last word is the adjective [windig] windy [windig] Altogether we have [Es wird windig] Literally this means it will be windy. In case you are somewhere where the weather can change very quickly and let me tell you that can easily happen at the North Sea during fall and winter, you can ask, what will the weather be today [Wie wird das Wetter heute] Let’s break it down by syllable [Wie wird das Wetter heute] Now let’s hear it once again [Wie wird das Wetter heute] and as you can see, we have the same pattern of the phrase we have previously seen [Wie wird das Wetter] which literally means what will be the weather and then [heute] today in place of [morgen] tomorrow. Let’s break this word down and hear it one more time [heute] and [heute] Altogether we have [Wie wird das Wetter heute] which literally means what will be the weather today and we translate it as what will the weather be today.
Okay to close our today’s lesson, we would like you to practice what you’ve just learned. I will provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you are responsible for shouting it out aloud. You have a few seconds before I give you the answer. So [Viel Glück] which means good luck in German.
What will the weather be tomorrow [Wie wird das Wetter morgen] It will rain [Es wird regnen] it will snow [Es wird schneien] it will be sunny [Es wird sonnig] it will be windy [Es wird windig] what will the weather be today [Wie wird das Wetter heute]
That’s going to do it for today.
