F: German Survival Phrases. Lesson 12. Restaurant Part 1. Today we will cover getting a table in the section of the restaurant you want. In Germany, smoking is still accepted in some restaurants but then you can ask for a nonsmoking seat or perhaps you would like a smoking seat. Either way, let’s cover that first. Now remember, when you enter a restaurant, you will hear [Wieviele Personen sind in Ihrer Gruppe?]. This will likely be followed by one of the following. Nonsmoking in German is [Nicht-Raucher]. Let’s break it down by syllable [Nicht -Raucher] Now let’s hear it once again [Nicht-Raucher]. This word consists of two words [Nicht] and [Raucher] The first word [Nicht] means non. Let’s hear it one more time. [Nicht] This is followed by a smoker which in German is [Raucher] Now you can beat them to the punch by saying how many people there are in your party and nonsmoking first. Let’s try it with a group of three people. [Wir sind drei Personen und Nicht-Raucher] which means in English, we are three people and nonsmokers. The only added word we have here is [und] which means and. Let’s hear that word again [und] Now let’s hear the phrase again [Wir sind drei Personen und Nicht-Raucher] Remember, you can plug in any number more than one here. For just one person, you can use [Ich bin Nicht-Raucher] One more time, that’s [Ich bin Nicht-Raucher] which means in English, I am a nonsmoker. A lot of Germans smoke but the government is passing more and more laws against smoking in public buildings. Smoking at the workplace, smoking in restaurants and bars. Companies are participating in that change. For example, the Bahn, the German railroad company used to have smoking cars in their trains but now you don’t see them anymore.
M: Okay to close our today’s lesson, we’d like you to practice what you’ve just learned. I provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you are responsible for shouting it out aloud. You have a few seconds before I give you the answer. So [Viel Glück] which means good luck in German.
F: Smoker [Raucher] nonsmoker [Nicht-Raucher] We are three people and nonsmokers [Wir sind drei Personen und Nicht-Raucher] I am a nonsmoker [Ich bin Nicht-Raucher]
M: That’s going to do it for today.
