Hallo, ich bin Laura. Hi everybody! I’m Laura. |
Welcome to GermanPod101.com’s "Deutsch in 3 Minuten". |
The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn German. |
In the last lesson, we learned the numbers from one to ten. |
Have you forgotten? |
Here I'll tell you again: |
Eins, zwei, drei, vier, fünf, sechs, sieben, acht, neun, zehn!! |
And now let’s continue from eleven. |
Elf |
[slowly] elf. |
Zwölf. |
[slowly] zwölf. |
Dreizehn. |
[slowly] dreizehn. |
Vierzehn. |
[slowly] vierzehn. |
Fünfzehn. |
[slowly] fünfzehn. |
Sechzehn. |
[slowly] sechzehn. |
Siebzehn. |
[slowly] siebzehn. |
Achtzehn. |
[slowly] achtzehn. |
Neunzehn. |
[slowly] neunzehn. |
And finally we have: |
Zwanzig |
[slowly] zwanzig. |
Okay, now repeat after me. I'll say the numbers and give you time to repeat each one. |
11. elf |
12. zwölf |
13. dreizehn |
14. vierzehn |
15. fünfzehn |
16. sechzehn |
17. siebzehn |
18. achtzehn |
19. neunzehn |
20. zwanzig |
These numbers may seem harder to remember, but you really just have to memorize elf, zwölf, sechzehn, siebzehn and zwanzig. But for dreizehn, vierzehn, fünfzehn, achtzehn and neunzehn, you just have to add zehn or "ten". |
Let’s not stop at 20! Counting from ten to one hundred is super easy! Now I'll give you the tens: |
[G screen-ws] |
dreißig (30) |
vierzig (40) |
fünfzig (50) |
sechzig (60) |
siebzig (70) |
achtzig (80) |
neunzig (90) |
hundert (100) |
While you have to memorize a few of these numbers, there are a couple of tricks that will make memorizing them incredibly easy! In order to build vierzig/ "fourty" you just add ten “zig” to four “vier" and you get vierzig. The same goes for fünfzig, achtzig und neunzig [slowly] |
Vierzig, fünfzig, achtzig, neunzig, |
Let's have look on the pronunciation. If g comes last in the word, it makes a "ch"sound. So You would say "vierzich" instead of vierzig. |
[slowly]vierzig. |
You probably recognized the dots on a, o and u./ ä,ö,ü. For example: fünf/ five These are called Umlaute. Ä is being pronounced like the e in elder. Ö comes close to the o in worry and ü could be imagined as something between u and e. |
[slowly]ä,ö,ü. |
The last thing to learn today is how to form compound numbers above twenty. This is also super easy! |
Take the tens and simply add the numbers you learned in the previous lesson. |
Let’s try it out. |
How would you say "fifty-six" in German? Let’s take it step-by-step. "Fifty" is Fünfzig, "six" is sechs..The smaller number comes first and than add und "and" in German and finally fünfzig"fifty". Sechsundfünfzig. |
[slowly]Sechundfünfzig |
Sechundfünfzig! It’s done! Isn’t that easy? |
Let’s make another number, for instance, "ninety-eight." |
Take "eight"acht, add "and"und, and then "ninety", neunzig:! |
Achtundneunzig! |
Now it’s time for Laura’s insights. |
If you are talking about decades in German like the 80ies or the 20ies you just have to add er after the actual number. So you would say achtziger or zwanziger. Here You spell g as a g and not as a ch since it doesn’t come at the end of the words. Now You can talk about the exciting 80ies or golden 20ies with your frinds. |
After only two lessons, you are now able to count to one hundred in German! |
In the next lesson we are going to put your number knowledge to use! Do you have all the skills you need to go shopping in Germany? If not, I'll be waiting for you in our next Deutsch in 3 Minuten lesson. |
Bis bald! |

Ich kenne alle Nummern auf Deutsch, Laura.
Hi Ace_of_DiscaL,
Thank you for your feedback.
I am glad you bring this up. 👍 I have seen this video
the first time today and I would partly disagree with Laura.
Germany is a country with many different dialects and people in
every part of the country are proud of their "version" of the German language.
I don't think it is a rule applying in general that you pronounce the "g" as "ch".
Frankly, I am surprised. I would say that both versions - g and ch - are perfectly
good German pronunciation and I will highlight this with our team. 😉
If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us again.
Kind regards,
Reinhard

The numbers in tens were recorded with the wrong pronounciations (English "g" sound instead of "ch") 😮
Laura taught us to use "g" only when we are talking about decades (e.g. vierziger "40s" or achtziger "80s" for instance).
