Lesson Transcript

Hallo, ich heiße Laura. Hi everybody! I’m Laura.
Welcome to GermanPod101.com’s “Deutsch in 3 Minuten”. The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn German.
In the last lesson, we learned how to use the verb machen which means "to do" in German.
In this lesson, we will learn how to use lieben, the most romantic German verb, which is also the third verb in our series dedicated to the most common German verbs.
Lieben means "to love" in German, so in this lesson we are going to see how to use it correctly. We’ll also learn how to make a difference between lieben to love and mögen to like. Let’s go! Los geht’s!
Imagine you are in a restaurant with your fiancé and he or she asks you: Magst du Käse?
This means "Do you like cheese?" in an informal form.
So supposing you like it you can say
Ja, ich mag Käse.
[slowly] Ja, ich mag Käse.
So let’s break down this answer:
First we had:
Ja which is simply "Yes."
Ich is "I" in German.
After we have mag, which is the 1st person form of the verb mögen in the present indicative.
Finally we had Käse -- that is the correct way to call the cheese in general.
So all together it is Ja, ich mag Käse.
Mögen, "to like" is also the verb to use when talking about something you really like.
Ich mag ihn, "I like him" or Ich mag sie, "I like her". You use mögen if you are talking about friends but also if you are in love with somebody but don’t want to be direct. To express stronger feelings, you would use the verb "lieben", to love.
In fact, the verb lieben has different levels of understanding. For example, if you say
Ich liebe Käse it will mean that you really like cheese.
To say that you really love or enjoy something or someone, you can add the word sehr at the end of the sentence as in Ich liebe diesen Film sehr which means "I really like this movie". Here it is stronger and means you like it very much.
And of course, lieben is above all the verb of love, so if you are talking to the person you fell in love with, you can tell him Ich liebe dich, which is the famous "I love you" in German! Isn’t that romantic?
Now it’s time for Laura’s Insights.
To express feelings of love towards your family you would say Ich hab’ dich lieb since Ich liebe dich is generally used between couples. Ich hab’ dich lieb is not as strong as Ich liebe dich and can be expressed without being explicitly romantic.
In this lesson, we learned how to use the verb lieben depending on the degree of your love!
Next time we’ll learn another very useful and romantic verb, kommen.
Do you know what this German verb means? I’ll be waiting for you in the next Deutsch in 3 Minuten.
Bis bald!
