| Chuck: The conversation is between Mike, his German friend and a neighbor. Mike and his friend will be speaking informal German to each other, and formal German to the neighbor meeting for the first time. Now before we listen to the conversation… |

| D: Okay, the bed goes into the bedroom of course. The closet should go there too, but we need the space in order to construct the bed. Where should I put the closet meanwhile? |

| A: You can put it into the kitchen next to the kitchen table. |

| D: And this picture? |
| A: Das kommt an die Wand über dem Tisch. Guck mal, da ist schon ein Nagel in der Wand. |
| A: That goes onto the wall above the table. Look, there is already a nail in the wall. |
| D: Das ist gut, denn ich habe vergessen, einen Hammer mitzubringen. |
| D: That's good, because I forgot to bring a hammer. |
| A: Hast du einen Schraubenzieher, damit wir das Bett aufbauen können? |
| A: Do you have a screwdriver, so that we can construct the bed? |
| D: Ja, aber laut Anleitung liegt auch ein spezieller Schraubenzieher dabei. |
| D: Yes, but according to the instruction manual there is also a special screwdriver included. |
| A: Hmm, dieser hier? Und diese Schrauben? |
| A: Hmm, this one here? And these screws? |
| D: Ich bin mir nicht sicher. Man muss IKEA studiert haben, um die Anleitungen zu verstehen. |
| D: I am not sure. You have to have majored in IKEA to understand the instruction manuals. |
| CULTURAL INSIGHTS |
| Judith: Ok, so I think this is a good time to give you some tips on how to make friends in Germany when you arrive here. |
| Chuck: Yeah, because you’ll need those friends to help you make the furniture. |
| Judith: Well, a lot of people told me that Germans seem to be colder when you meet them. But I can tell you that when a German smiles at you they really mean it, it’s not just to be polite. |
| Chuck: Yeah, and I’d say if you want to make friends when you’re new in the city, you can hang out with your co-workers of course or go to different events in the city, but be sure to check out the clubs too. Germans love their clubs. |
| Judith: Or you could attend classes. For example, there are low-cost German for Foreigners classes offered by the VHS, that’s the evening school. |
| Chuck: Yeah, but you should be a bit careful though that you don’t make too many just non-German friends cause you could get stuck in a rut of just speaking only English. I think a good idea would be to look for a German language exchange partner. |
| Judith: Definitely. That way you can learn about German culture as well. Another thing you should pay attention to is that when you meet people and you shake hands, you should bow your head a little instead of really standing straight. If you don’t do that you might come across as arrogant. |

| Chuck: Let’s talk about where we can place things. For this you’ll need to know the German prepositions of location. Since the act of placing things always implies motion. All the prepositions require the accusative. So, Judith, could you give us an overview of these prepositions? |
| Judith: Yes, for example you could put something [An die Wand]. |
| Chuck: “On the wall”, as in attaching something to the wall. |
| Judith: Or [Auf den Tisch]. |
| Chuck: “Onto the table”, putting something on top of the table. |
| Judith: So the difference between [An] and [Auf] is [An] attaches something to a verticals surface and [Auf] to a horizontal surface. Then we have [Über]. |
| Chuck: Above the table. |
| Judith: This is not on top of the table, but rather in the air above it. |
| Chuck: [Otherwise] it would be [Auf dem Tisch], right? |
| Judith: Yes. |
| Chuck: Notice the [difference between “Auf dem Tisch” and “Auf den Tisch”]. |
| Judith: [Auf dem Tisch] describes the location. [Auf den Tisch] is the direction where you put it. [Unter den Tisch] |
| Chuck: “Under the table” or “underneath the table”. |
| Judith: Here we don’t make any distinction between attaching it on the bottom side of the table or putting it underneath. |
| Chuck: The only thing you put under the table directly would be chewing gum, right? |
| Judith: Yes. |
| Chuck: So nothing specific about that. We don’t do that in Germany. I'm sure no one does that here. |
| Judith: Yeah, right. We could also put things [Neben das Bett]. |
| Chuck: Next to the bed. |
| Judith: Or [Vor den Schrank]. |
| Chuck: In front of the closet. |
| Judith: Or, of course, [Hinter den Schrank]. |
| Chuck: Behind the closet. |
| Judith: These are just like in English. |

Here now a few suggestions for slight changes:

Küche, neben dem Küchentisch. ... über dem Tisch. Und es
ist gut, dass es schon einen Nagel gibt...
Mike fragt, ob sie einen Schraubenzieher haben um das Bett aufzubauen. Aber das
ist nicht nötig denn laut Anleitung kommt das Bett mit einem speziellen
Schraubenzieher. Aber sie haben noch einige/viele Fragen, da sie nicht IKEA
studiert haben, um die Anleitung zu verstehen.

Diese Serie war ganz toll und nützlich. Ich habe viel gelernt. Es gibt nicht so viele Lektionen, wenn man "wieviel Uhr ist es?" fragen kann, aber nicht ganz fließend ist. Ich denke, daß ich besser Deutsch jetzt sprechen.
I thought Intermediate would be reaaally difficult, but I find it better for my s than the Begginner series. You should suggest to those people with at least one year of classes to check Intermediate and not be afraid of it, imho.
