A good question. Thank you.


The German language uses the "zu" in connection with infinitives, the most

basic form of a verb.

Depending on another previous verb in the same sentence it is decided whether

we need the "zu" or not.

Some examples of verbs that demand the "zu" for the second verb are:

planen, probieren, versuchen, glauben, denken, hoffen.

An example would be: Katrina hofft den bellenden Hund zu verjagen.
