Hello, and welcome to the Culture File: Germany series at GermanPod101.com. In this series, we’re exploring essential information about Germany, German culture and German people. I’m Eric, and you're listening to Season 1, Lesson 19 - Winter Sport Locations.

Winter is not just a time for Christmas and New Year's parties. Many people consider Winter to be the best season for traveling, or verreisen. While some people use their holidays to escape Germany's cold weather, others embrace it, seeking holiday destinations that are buried in snow and ice.

For a winter holiday like this, you don't have to go very far at all. In Germany there are many places that offer a variety of opportunities, particularly for winter sports fans.

Among the most well-known winter sport locations in Bavaria are Oberstdorf and Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The place called Oberstdorf is located in the province of Allgäu Alps and is known for its large selection of winter sports. There you can go skiing, or Skifahren, or snowboarding, which is Snowboarden in German. Those who enjoy the outdoors also come to these locations to go hiking, or Wandern, or skating, or Schlittschuhlaufen. People who prefer to participate passively can watch ski-jumping, or Sprunglauf, In Oberstdorf, each year begins with the four-jump tournament, which is one of the most important ski-jumping competitions.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen is also a well-known winter sporting location in the Alps. There's something for every winter sport fan in Garmisch, as it provides opportunities for downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, skating, hiking, and snowboarding.

To avoid the long trip to the Alps, some people from northern Germany go to the Thuringian Forest, or Thüringer Wald, or to a place called Sauerland instead. These destinations are located around the middle of Germany, making them easy for northerners to reach. Sauerland is a rural and hilly area where you can enjoy forest scenes, and both of these areas offer numerous opportunities and facilities for visitors to try out various alpine sports.
