Ostfriesenwitze

Was ist, wenn ein Ostfriese eine Fliege verschluckt? Dann hat er mehr Hirn im Magen als im Kopf!
Manchmal denke ich, so viele Witze, wie es gibt, müssten die Menschen eigentlich viel mehr lachen! Es gibt Witze über Blondinen, über Kellner, politische Witze, Witze über Tiere und Witze über verschiedene Bevölkerungsgruppen. Zur letzten Gruppe gehören in Deutschland vor allem die beliebten Ostfriesenwitze.

Die Ostfriesen sind eine Bevölkerungsgruppe im Nordwesten Deutschlands, die für ihre Wortkargheit bekannt sind. In den Witzen über sie wird oft auf ihre angebliche Dummheit angespielt. Ab und zu, vor allem, wenn ein Ostfriese selber einen Ostfriesenwitz erzählt, machen sich die Ostfriesen aber auch gerne über eine andere Bevölkerungsgruppe lustig, vorzugsweise über die Bayern. So heißt ein Witz zum Beispiel: Was machen die Ostfriesen bei Ebbe? Sie verkaufen Land an die Bayern. Hier sieht man auch, woraus ein Ostfriesenwitz typischerweise besteht: Auf eine harmlose Frage folgt meist eine etwas ungewöhnliche Antwort.

Im Gegensatz zu vielen anderen Witzarten, weiß man bei den Ostfriesenwitzen interessanterweise ganz genau, wie sie entstanden sind. Als Erfinder der Ostfriesenwitze gilt der Norddeutsche Borwin Bandelow. Er hat Ende der 60er Jahr in einer Schülerzeitung die ersten Witze über Ostfriesen gerissen, die er sich mit ein paar Freunden auf einer Klassenfahrt ausgedacht hatte. Von da an gab es eine wahre Welle an Ostfriesenwitzen in Deutschland und Jahr für Jahr kommen neue Witze hinzu. Vor allem Komiker wie Otto Waalkes oder Karl Dall sind durch ihre Ostfriesenwitze berühmt geworden und dass obwohl sie selber aus Ostfriesland kommen!

So und nun zuletzt noch ein Witz. Warum nehmen Ostfriesen einen Stein und eine Schachtel Streichhölzer mit ins Bett? Mit dem Stein werfen sie das Licht aus und mit dem Streichholz schauen sie nach, ob sie auch wirklich getroffen haben.

Accusative and genitive:

In the example above you would ask "Auf WAS wird angespielt?". (accusative)

Another sample sentence:

Als ich das sagte, spielte ich auf Peters Kommentar von gestern an.

In this case you could ask both:

"Auf WESSEN Kommentar spieltest du an?" --> Peters! (genitive)

"Auf WAS spieltest du an?" --> Peters Kommentar! (accusative)

Thanks Reinhard - if I understand correctly "anspielen auf" is a phrase that always takes the accusative. It's just something one has to memorize. "Auf" in this scenario is not really functioning as a wechsel preposition. Movement or no movement is not a part of the thinking process. This phrase just always take the accusative case. Do I have this right?

You are right in that "auf" is a "Wechselpräposition". "Wechsel" in this case though in the sense of change

(instead of movement). In other words, its use can change between dative and accusative, depending on sentence

and context.

"anspielen auf" is a standing expression meaning "to allude to". In this case: alluding to the supposed stupidity of a group

of people. The possessive determiner "ihre" for third person plural accusative is correct. 👍

Grammar question: "In den Witzen über sie wird oft auf ihre angebliche Dummheit angespielt."

"auf" is a wechsel preposition. In this case, presumably there is no movement, so would it not take the dative case? Would it not then be "ihrer angeblichen Dummheit". Also does "ihr" as a possessive pronoun then follow with mixed declension for the adjective, like an "ein" word?
