Deutsche Sprache – schwere Sprache? Quatsch! Deutsche Sprache – schöne Sprache! So schön, dass in den letzten Jahren immer mehr Sänger und Bands auftauchen, die auf Deutsch singen! In den 90er Jahren gab es zwar einige Bands wie Fettes Brot und die Fantastischen Vier, die einige Erfolge verzeichnen konnten, aber der Großteil der Lieder im Radio wurde doch eindeutig auf Englisch gesungen. Mittlerweile hat sich das aber geändert.

Einige deutsche Bands und Musiker wurden ja auch schon hier bei GermanPod101.com in den Intermediate Music Lessons vorgestellt und wen findet man dort natürlich auch? Rammstein! Also über Musikgeschmack lässt sich ja bekanntlich streiten, aber…Rammstein? Ich möchte niemandem zu nahe treten, aber vielleicht kann mir ja hier mal jemand erklären, warum Rammstein außerhalb von Deutschland so bekannt und beliebt ist? Ist es die Poesie der Texte und die optimistischen Melodien der Lieder?

Und dann…Tokio Hotel. Wirklich? Es scheint sich außerhalb Deutschlands das Motto durchgesetzt zu haben, je verrückter die deutschen Bands sind, desto besser sind sie auch! Verrückt! Oder gehört das alles zu einer Taktik, das Image Deutschlands im Ausland aufzupäppeln. Ganz nach dem Motto "weg von der alten deutschen Biederkeit, hin zu einem modernen, ausgeflippten Image"?

Na ja, nicht, dass ihr jetzt denkt, ich wäre gegen diese etwas ausgefallenen Bands…überhaupt nicht! Ich gönne ihnen ihren Erfolg! Nur… ich verstehe es nur einfach nicht… Mir liegen da eher Musiker wie Herbert Grönemeyer, Clueso und Xavier Naidoo oder deutsche Bands wie Ich+Ich. Die schlagen etwas leisere und weniger ausgeflippte Töne an und sind deswegen wahrscheinlich auch im Ausland auf leisen Sohlen unterwegs.

Aber ist das nicht schade?! Deutschland hat noch mehr zu bieten als düstere Musik und Jungs mit seltsamen Frisuren! Ich starte hiermit einen Aufruf; Gebt den Normalos eine Chance!

Thank you for the response Reinhard - I have no doubt that the alternative music I listen to, virtually nobody in Germany would be familiar with either.😄 I mean no disrespect to Rammstein. I can see they put a lot of work into their videos, but the music is not exactly my thing.

Understand your explanation of "auf leisen Sohlen". The overall impression makes sense. Just tough to put into words.

"Die schlagen etwas leisere und weniger ausgeflippte Töne an und sind deswegen wahrscheinlich auch im Ausland auf leisen Sohlen unterwegs." = "Their music is somewhat quieter and less outlandish, and therefore probably is less noticed abroad." This reads better but I don't think entirely captures the original meaning.

Your translation of the sentence in question is accurate. Just the last part "... make a more subtle impression ..." I am

not entirely sure about. That may be though because I am not a native English speaker and can therefore not be completely

sure about the meaning. My interpretation of "auf leisen Sohlen" in this context would be: because they are not as "crazy" as other German bands and that's what most fans seem to look for, the don't have the same impact overseas, or, it is quieter around them. You don't see and hear quite as much about them in the respective media.

Had to Google these bands/musicians. Never heard of any of them.

The sentence "Die schlagen etwas leisere und weniger ausgeflippte Töne an und sind deswegen wahrscheinlich auch im Ausland auf leisen Sohlen unterwegs." seems difficult to translate. Neither the Google or DeepL translation entirely makes sense. I think it means "They strike somewhat quieter and less abrasive tones, and therefore probably make a more subtle impression abroad." Still doesn't seem entirely right.

It is a good lesson but the whole recording of the text is not available, the recording ends with the words ich+ich, which is not the end of the text.

p.s. there are plenty of great German bands and artists that y'all have not mentioned.

I like hearing about other German bands as well as those I like and am familiar with.

I love die Ärzte.

oh wait there was Falco - who is Austrian but he was successful outside Austria/Germany/Switzerland . Though he did mix English with his German.
