Eric: Welcome to 3-Minute German Season 1, Lesson 20 - Talking about your likes. In this lesson, you’ll learn how to ask and affirmatively answer a question about your likes in German.
Body
Eric: Here's the informal way to ask 'Do you like cheese?' in German.
Albert: [Normal] Magst du Käse?
Eric: First we have the casual phrase for 'do you like'
Albert: [Normal] Magst du [Slow] Magst du
Eric: Followed by the word meaning 'cheese'
Albert: [Normal] Käse [Slow] Käse
Eric: Note the rising intonation. Listen again to the informal question meaning 'Do you like cheese?'
Albert: [Slow] Magst du Käse? [Normal] Magst du Käse?
Eric: Now, imagine you're speaking to a stranger. Here's the formal way to ask, 'Do you like sweets?'
Albert: [Normal] Mögen Sie Süßigkeiten?
Eric: First we have the formal phrase meaning 'do you like'
Albert: [Normal] Mögen Sie [Slow] Mögen Sie
Eric: Followed by the word for ‘sweets’
Albert: [Normal] Süßigkeiten [Slow] Süßigkeiten
Eric: Note again the rising intonation. Listen again to the formal question meaning 'Do you like sweets?'
Albert: [Slow] Mögen Sie Süßigkeiten? [Normal] Mögen Sie Süßigkeiten?

Albert: [Normal] Käse [Slow] Käse
Eric: Listen again to the response, 'Yes, I like Cheese.'
Albert: [Slow] Ja, ich mag Käse. [Normal] Ja, ich mag Käse.
Eric: Here's how you would respond 'Yes, I like cheese a lot'-
Albert: [Normal] Ja, ich liebe Käse.
Eric: First comes the word for 'yes'
Albert: [Normal] ja [Slow] ja
Eric: Next we have the word for 'I'
Albert: [Normal] ich [Slow] ich
Eric: Followed by the word that means 'to love'
Albert: [Normal] liebe [Slow] liebe
Eric: And finally, the word meaning 'Cheese'
Albert: [Normal] Käse [Slow] Käse
Eric: Listen again to the response meaning 'Yes, I like cheese a lot.'
Albert: [Slow] Ja, ich liebe Käse. [Normal] Ja, ich liebe Käse.
Cultural Insight
Eric: Now it's time for a quick cultural insight.
Albert: To express feelings of love towards your family, you would say Ich hab’ dich lieb since Ich liebe dich is generally used between couples. Ich hab’ dich lieb is not as strong as Ich liebe dich, and can be expressed without being explicitly romantic.

Outro

Eric: And that’s all for this lesson. Don’t forget to check out the lesson notes, and we’ll see you in the next lesson!

Hi Christine,

That's a very good question!👍

Generally you would be having a casual relationship

with someone you say "Ich mag dich!" to, and from that

point on more than a casual relationship might develop.

"Ich mag Sie" is less common because you are expressing

feelings for someone you still have a more formal connection with.

You can definitely say it though, especially if you feel that the other person

will take it the right way.

Thank you.

If you have any further questions, please let us know.
