Hey, finally, it's Grillsaison. ^^
Grillen probably comes close to the American meaning of Barbecue, only that it's not necesarrily limited to ones backyard. It can also take place in a Gartenanlagen (gardens) or you can simply go to a lake or a park (provided it is allowed there) and start there.
You get a brazier along, eat with friends and just enjoy your time near a lake far away from day to day concernes.

A normal German Grillabend isn't perfect without some marinaded Schnitzel or Steak and some Bratwürstchen, along with some beer to cool you down and some beer to be poured over the Schnitzel and Bratwürste. ^^
