Where's the subject ? The object ?

Postby mpalmier74 » November 3rd, 2010 8:42 pm

Hi,

I'm trying to translate the following sentence, but I'm not sure I understand the meaning.

In Deutschland beeinflußten philosophische, weniger politische Ideen die Dichtung.

Any help ?

"In Germany philosophical ideas influenced poetry rather then political ideas."

It means that philosophical ideas have more influence then political ideas. The basic sentence is: In Deutschland beeinflussten philosophische Ideen die Dichtung. (In Germany philosophical ideas influenced poetry). With the , weniger politische between philosophische and Ideen you give an alternative (political ideas that could influenced poetry) and at the same time say that they aren't as important (with the weniger).

I hope it's clearer now.
