German Lyrics not making sense

Postby timwilde » March 14th, 2010 9:50 am

Hi, One of my favorite German rock bands, Oomph has a song that I cant really make any sense out of, well just a line in one of thier songs anyway. The song is called Augen Auf. The lyric is as follows:

Eckstein, Eckstein - Alles muss versteckt sein

Now, if I'm translating or understanding this correctly, this translates out to:

Cornerstone, Cornerstone - Everything must be hidden

Is this correct, and if so, is this some sort of cultural phrase? Either I'm misunderstanding/mistranslating or something was wildly lost in the translation.

Indeed, you translated it well.

This is a nursery rhyme. Children say it when playing hide-and-seek.

Ok, surprisingly that makes the song as a whole make a little more sense. There's a little boy that counts from 1-10, then the chorus is "Augen auf ich komme" which repeats then "Aufgepasst ich komme Zeig dich nicht!"

Which that all starts making sense if it's a part of a hide-and-seek game.

Thank you.

In the context of the song, it has been turned into something more sinister.

Also another reference that might be difficult: "Wahrheit oder Pflicht" is the German name of "truth or dare" - except that's a game for older kids.
