| Frau Schneider: Historische Romane mag ich gerne, oder auch Biographien. In letzter Zeit interessiere ich mich besonders für die Geschichte Berlins. |

| Frau Schneider: Vielleicht irre ich mich auch. Aber mir fällt ein - wenn Sie gerne Krimis lesen, könnten Sie das doch auf Deutsch versuchen. Die Sprache in Krimis ist ja meistens nicht so schwierig. |

| Paul: What kind of books do you most like to read? |
| Frau Schneider: Historische Romane mag ich gerne, oder auch Biographien. In letzter Zeit interessiere ich mich besonders für die Geschichte Berlins. |
| Mrs Schneider: I like historical novels, or also biographies. Lately I'm particularly interested in the history of Berlin. |
| Paul: Stimmt, ich erinnere mich... Das haben Sie mir erzählt. |
| Paul: Right, I remember... You told me. |
| Frau Schneider: Ja. Und haben Sie ein Lieblingsbuch? |
| Mrs Schneider: Yes. And do you have a favorite book? |
| Paul: Eins? Nein... viele! Ich mag eigentlich alle Bücher von Neal Stephenson. Er ist mein Lieblingsautor. |
| Paul: One? No... many! I actually like all books by Neal Stephenson. He is my favorite author. |
| Frau Schneider: Neal Stephenson? Hm, sagt mir gar nichts... |
| Mrs Schneider: Neal Stephenson? Hm, doesn't ring a bell… |
| Paul: Er ist hauptsächlich ein Science-Fiction-Autor. Aber ich mag auch Fantasy-Romane, zum Beispiel von Murakami, und sogar Krimis! |
| Paul: He is mostly a science fiction author. But I also like fantasy novels, for example by Murakami, and even crime novels! |
| Frau Schneider: Murakami sagen Sie? Gibt es von ihm nicht gerade ein neues Buch? Ich erinnere mich nur nicht an den Titel... |
| Mrs Schneider: Murakami you say? Isn't there a new book by him just now? I just don't remember the title… |
| Paul: Hmm... Ich habe nichts von einem neuen Buch von ihm gehört. |
| Paul: Hmm... I haven't heard anything about a new book by him. |
| Frau Schneider: Vielleicht irre ich mich auch. Aber mir fällt ein - wenn Sie gerne Krimis lesen, könnten Mrs Schneider: Maybe I'm wrong. But I just had an idea - if you like to read crime novels, you could try to do that in German. The language in crime novels is usually not very difficult. |

| Chuck: That sound like a great idea. What books do you have in mind? |
| Judith: Well, everyone has heard of Goethe, Schiller and the other great Classic German authors, but they’re quite difficult to read for a language learner. |
| Chuck: If you want to start reading German books, you should probably start with more modern books. What are some good German authors. |
| Judith: Well, for fantasy I would recommend [Cornelia Funke] or [Wolfgang Hohlbein]. |
| Chuck: Actually, [Wolfgang Holhbein] is also good for thriller and horror as well. |
| Judith: Yeah, he writes a lot. For science fiction how about [Frank Schätzing] or [Wolfgang Jeschke]? |
| Chuck: Or for Krimis [Heinz G. Konsalik]? |
| Judith: For western you should check out Karl May. It’s an older author but with a very easy, enjoyable style of writing and everyone knows him. |
| Chuck: Sometimes when I'm studying a new language I like to look at children’s books. Would you have any suggestions for that category? |
| Judith: Yeah, [Michael Ende] and [Erich Kästner] are two very famous German authors of children’s books. |

| Chuck: “Doesn’t tell me anything” or “doesn’t ring a bell”. |
| Judith: [Sagt mir nichts] Then, really, really common [Zum Beispiel]. |

| Chuck: You’ll also often see this abbreviated as z.B. |
| Judith: Then we have [Meistens]. |
| Chuck: Most of the time. |
| Judith: This word has the same root as [Die meisten]. |
| Chuck: Most people. |
| Judith: It’s basically an adverb based on [Die meisten]. And finally, [In Ordnung]. |
| Chuck: “Ok” or “alright”. |
| Judith: Order is really important to Germans. |

| Chuck: The focus of this lesson is how to express likes. |
| Judith: There are two things to consider. Basically, what is it that you like, is it a verb or do you express it as a verb? Then you could say something like [Ich] then the verb [Gerne] like [Ich lese gerne]. |
| Chuck: I like reading. |
| Judith: If you want to add extra information, [Ich lese gerne mittags im Garten]. |
| Chuck: I like reading in the garden in the afternoon. |
| Judith: Or you can use a sub clause with [Zu]. [Ich mag es zu lesen]. “Ich mag es mittags im Garten zu lesen”. |
| Chuck: “I like to read.” Or “I like to read in the garden, in the afternoon”, just like the first sentence. Is there any difference between those? |
| Judith: Of course. The one uses [Gerne] and the other uses [Mag]. |
| Chuck: So the meaning is the same. |
| Judith: Yeah. |
| Chuck: Ok |
| Judith: And if you most like something you say [Am liebsten] like [Am liebsten lese ich]. |
| Chuck: I most like to read. |
| Judith: Ok, now what about if you have a noun that you want to express? You could also use [Ich mag] like [Ich mag Fußball]. |
| Chuck: I like soccer. |
| Judith: You can say [Ich interessiere mich für]. [Ich interessiere mich für Fußball]. |
| Chuck: I'm interested in soccer. |
| Judith: And if you most like soccer, you can say [Ich mag Fußball am liebsten]. |
| Chuck: I most like soccer. |
| Judith: [Alle anderen Sportarten interessieren mich nicht so] |
| Chuck: All other sports don’t interest me so much. |
| Judith: And finally, you can “Liebling”. Like “Mein Lieblingssport ist Fußaball |
| Chuck: My favorite sport is soccer. |
