Joe: Ja. Und ich reise auch gern.
Anke: Oh, ich auch!
Joe: Du kannst mich ja mal in Washington besuchen!
Anke: Ja gerne!

POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Judith: Alright. Time to talk about hobbies, isn’t it?
Chuck: Sounds good.
Judith: In their free time, Germans watch a lot of TV. Three hours a day on average.
Chuck: Well that’s still lower than the American average of let’s say 4 hours a day – and rising.
Judith: I think it is rising here too. The single most popular hobby apart from watching TV or surfing the internet is probably soccer. The majority of Germans are or have been in a soccer club at some point in their life.
Chuck: And right now during the world cup a lot of that is watching soccer on TV.
Judith: The best of both worlds.
Chuck: But the entire scene of hobby clubs is much more developed than in say America because schools don’t typically offer many clubs of their own. So youths and adults alike join public clubs instead.
Judith: Every city has a large range of sports clubs from ball games to martial arts and dancing.
Chuck: There are also gaming clubs particularly popular are Skat and Doppelkopf, German card games, I guess you could say they are somewhat like Bridge clubs.
Judith: Yeah.
Chuck: And then you also have chess clubs and clubs for German board games.
Judith: Yeah and then there are clubs dedicated to keeping alive some part of culture like the shooting clubs, Karneval clubs, dialect clubs and foreign folklore clubs.
Chuck: Finally there are breeding clubs, rabbits, pigeons et cetera and collective clubs and many more like juggling.
VOCAB LIST
Chuck: Let’s take a look at the vocabulary for this lesson. The first word is
Judith: Tennis.
Chuck: Tennis.
Judith: Tennis. Tennis.
Chuck: Next
Judith: Schlagen.
Chuck: To beat, hit or defeat.
Judith: Schlagen. Schlagen. And this is a vowel changing verb. So the form is er schlägt.
Chuck: Next
Judith: Mögen.
Chuck: To like.
Judith: Mögen. Mögen. This is irregular and see our grammar point for this.
Chuck: Next
Judith: Jeder.
Chuck: Every
Judith: Jeder. Jeder.
Chuck: Next
Judith: Hobby.
Chuck: Hobby.
Judith: Hobby. Hobby. Das Hobby and the plural is hobbys. Be careful, this is spelled with a ys in German.
Chuck: Next
Judith: Lesen.
Chuck: To read.
Judith: Lesen. Lesen. This is a vowel changing verb again so be careful, er liest with ie.
Chuck: Next.
Judith: Schwimmen.
Chuck: To swim.
Judith: Schwimmen. Schwimmen.
Chuck: Next
Judith: Fahrrad.
Chuck: Bicycle or bike.
Judith: Fahrrad. Fahrrad. Das Fahrrad and the plural is Fahrräder.

Judith: Sehr. Sehr.
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Chuck: Let’s have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Judith: The first word that we want to look at is Tennisschläger. This one consists of Tennis and Schläger. The er ending in Schläger is for a person who does something and the base word is schlagen.
Chuck: To beat.
Judith: So if schlagen is to beat, then Schläger means beater or also club, the thing that you use for beating. So Tennisschläger is well, tennis club or tennis racket.
Chuck: Yes.
Judith: Next let’s look at Fahrrad fahren. This is a noun created on the basis of Fahrrad.
Chuck: Bike
Judith: And fahren.
Chuck: To drive or go.
Judith: You could also say Ich fahre gern Fahrrad so well in German, we say we drive a bike. We ride a bike. And suddenly, there is the word ja in the phrase to Du kannst mich ja mal in Washington besuchen. This has nothing to do with the word yes. It’s simply an affirmation like saying you know you can. You know you can visit me, Du kannst mich ja besuchen.

Lesson focus

Chuck: The focus of this lesson is the irregular German verb mögen.
Judith: To like. Mögen is another irregular German verb and in this lesson’s dialogue, you have encountered several forms of it such as du magst and wir mögen. It’s like the model verbs können or müssen. I think you’ve seen these before and just like them, mögen has just one stem for the singular forms and one stem for plural. Mögen uses the stem mag for all singular forms. So it goes ich mag, du magst, er mag. For the plural, it reverts back to mögen as a stem. Wir mögen, ihr mögt, sie mögen.
Chuck: This is an extremely useful verb when talking about what you like and dislike. So learn it well.
Judith: Yes remember. It’s mag or mög as a stem.

Outro

Chuck: That just about does it for today. Use a review track to perfect your pronunciation.
Judith: With this powerful audio file
Chuck: You will listen to and repeat key words and phrases aloud to perfect pronunciation.
Judith: It’s the best way to get good fast.
Chuck: Here at germanpod101.
Judith: So see you next week.
Chuck: Also, bis nächste Woche.
