Jason: Top 25 German Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 22: What's this? in German (In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for German learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.)
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question What's this? In German this is
Rilana: Was ist das?
The first word in the question is
Rilana: was
Jason: meaning what in English.
Rilana: (Slow, by syllable) was
Jason: Listen again and repeat.
Rilana: was
{Pause}
Jason: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Rilana: ist
Jason: meaning is.
Rilana: (Slow, by syllable) ist
Jason: Now repeat.
Rilana: ist
{Pause}
Listen to the the first 2 words of the question and repeat.
Rilana: was ist
{pause}
And after that
Rilana: das
Jason: meaning that.
Rilana: (Slow, by syllable) das
Jason: Now repeat.
Rilana: das
{Pause}
Listen to the entire question and repeat.
Rilana: was ist das

Jason: "It's a camera.. Again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.

Jason: meaning it.
Rilana: (Slow, by syllable) es
Jason: Now repeat
Rilana: es
{Pause}
Jason: And next
Rilana: ist
meaning is.
Rilana: (Slow, by syllable) ist
Jason:Now repeat.
Rilana: ist
{Pause}
Jason: And next
Rilana: eine
meaning a.
Rilana: (Slow, by syllable) eine
Jason:Now repeat.
Rilana: eine
{Pause}
Jason: And next
Rilana: Kamera
meaning camera.
Rilana: (Slow, by syllable) Kamera

Jason: Listen to the speaker say, It's a camera., and then repeat.
Rilana: Es ist eine Kamera.

Jason: To expand on the pattern, replace a camera with a German newspaper.
Rilana: eine deutsche Zeitung
Jason: a German newspaper
Rilana: (slow) eine deutsche Zeitung (regular) eine deutsche Zeitung
Jason: Listen to the phrase again, this time with a German newspaper
Rilana: Es ist eine deutsche Zeitung.
Jason: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace a camera. Say It's a German newspaper.

Rilana: Es ist eine deutsche Zeitung.
Jason: To expand on the pattern, replace a German newspaper with a tent.
Rilana: ein Zelt
Jason: a tent
Rilana: (slow) ein Zelt (regular) ein Zelt
Jason: Listen to the phrase again, this time with a tent
Rilana: Es ist ein Zelt.
Jason: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace the {lang} for a German newspaper. Say It's a tent.

Jason: To use a different phrase, replace a tent with a heater.
Rilana: eine Heizung
Jason: a heater
Rilana: (slow) eine Heizung (regular) eine Heizung
Jason: Listen to the phrase again, this time with a heater
Rilana: Es ist eine Heizung.
Jason: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace the {lang} for a tent. Say It's a heater.

Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you are visiting Germany and someone asks you what something is. It is (a) a camera. Respond to the question.
Rilana: Was ist das? (five seconds) Es ist eine Kamera.
Jason: Now imagine that it's (a) a German newspaper Respond to the question.
Rilana: Was ist das? (five seconds) Es ist eine deutsche Zeitung.
Jason: Imagine that it's (a) a tent. . Answer the speaker's question.
Rilana: Was ist das? (five seconds) Es ist ein Zelt.
Jason: Imagine that it's a heater. Respond to the question.
Rilana: Was ist das? (five seconds) Es ist eine Heizung.
Jason: You want to ask someone what something is. Ask the question
(5 seconds)
Rilana: Was ist das?
