INTRODUCTION
Maryssa: Hi everyone, I'm Maryssa.
Albert: And I'm Albert.
Maryssa: And welcome to Must-Know German Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 25. Tag Questions.
Maryssa: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for seeking confirmation about a statement.
PATTERN
Maryssa: For example,
Maryssa: "It is warm, right?"
Albert: Es ist warm oder?
Albert: [slow] Es ist warm oder?
Maryssa: The pattern for seeking confirmation about a statement has two elements. First, the statement for "It is warm".
Albert: Es ist warm.
Maryssa: Second, "right?".
Albert: oder?
Maryssa: Altogether, we have... "It is warm, right?"
Albert: Es ist warm oder? [slow] Es ist warm oder? [normal] Es ist warm oder?
Maryssa: First you start with a statement that you want to confirm, and then you add the German version of "right" at the end. The "right" in German is basically the word for "or" which implies "or not" to ask for confirmation.
Albert: Es ist warm oder?
Maryssa: So remember, to seek confirmation about a statement in German, start with a statement and add the German version for "right" at the end of the question.
Maryssa: Here is another example meaning, "The schnitzel is salty, right?" First, the statement for "The schnitzel is salty".
Albert: Das Schnitzel ist salzig.
Maryssa: Second, "right?".
Albert: oder?
Maryssa: Altogether we have...
Albert: Das Schnitzel ist salzig oder? [slow] Das Schnitzel ist salzig oder? [normal] Das Schnitzel ist salzig oder?
Maryssa: "The schnitzel is salty, right?"
[pause]
Albert: Das Schnitzel ist salzig oder?
Maryssa: How do you say - "The snow is cold, right?" To give you a hint, "cold" is...
Albert: kalt. [slow] kalt. [normal] kalt.
Maryssa: "The snow is cold, right?"
[pause]
Albert: Der Schnee ist kalt oder? [slow] Der Schnee ist kalt oder? [normal] Der Schnee ist kalt oder?
[pause]
Albert: Der Schnee ist kalt oder?

Maryssa: Let's review the sentences from this lesson. I will give you the English equivalent of the phrase and you are responsible for shouting it out loud in German. Here we go.
