Hello, and welcome to the Culture File: Germany series at GermanPod101.com. In this series, we’re exploring essential information about Germany, German culture and German people. I’m Eric, and you're listening to Season 1, Lesson 13 - German Breads.
What starts with "B" and can be found on German tables in the morning, around noon, and in the evening? I’m talking about Bread. Americans have cornflakes, Brits have sausages, and Germans have “BREAD.” Bread in German is Brot.
German breads are made with rye or wheat, or in German, Roggen or Weizen, and come with flax seed, Leinsamen, sunflower seeds, Sonnenblumenkerne, or poppy seed, Mohn. In German bakeries, or Bäckerei, you’ll find many different types of bread.
While many people like to eat sweet kinds of bread with jam, nougat creme, or nougat creme, such as Nutella for breakfast, others will have bread in a sandwich for lunch, or in German Pausenbrot, or bread for supper topped with different types of lunch-meat or cheese.
Apart from the dark wholemeal or Vollkorn bread, rolls are also very popular in Germany. Fresh rolls from the baker are a must-have when you're having a nice comfy breakfast on the weekend. In German, there’s a verb meaning “to prepare a sandwich”—schmieren, which shows just how much Germans love sandwiches.
