| M: In today’s lesson, we will introduce you to a phrase that will help you get into the places you need to be. In some places, trains and subways are the way to travel but it’s also very useful to know how to rent a car, a scooter or a bicycle. In German, I would like to rent a car is [Ich möchte gerne ein Auto mieten] Let’s break it down by syllable [Ich möchte gerne ein Auto mieten] Now let’s see it once again [Ich möchte gerne ein Auto mieten] The first word [Ich] is one of the words we already covered in some previous lessons and it means I. Let’s see it one more time [Ich] This is followed by [möchte] which in English is, would like to. Let’s break down this word and hear it once again [möchte] Then we have [gerne] which literally means with pleasure. [gerne] So to recap here, we have [Ich möchte gerne] Literally this means I would like with pleasure. Let’s take a look at the next word [ein] which means a, indefinite article for neutral nouns. Let’s listen to this word one more time [ein] And this is followed by [Auto] which is the German word for car [Auto] Finally we have the infinite verb form [mieten] to rent. Altogether we have [Ich möchte gerne ein Auto mieten] Literally this means I would like with pleasure a car to rent. Now we look at the words for other vehicles to open up our transportation options. In German, the word for scooter, moped is [Moped] Let’s break it down by syllable [Moped] and [Moped] and the phrase, I would like to rent a scooter or a moped is [Ich möchte gerne ein Moped mieten] Well, let’s try it with some other vehicles you would like to rent. Motorbike in German is [Motorrad] Let’s break this word down by syllable and hear it one more time [Motorrad] And the phrase I would like to rent a motorbike is [Ich möchte ein Motorrad mieten] And if you love cycling for example along Germany’s beautiful coast at the Baltic Sea, then you might want to rent a bicycle. The German word for bicycle is [Fahrrad] Let’s break down this word and listen to it once more [Fahrrad] And the phrase, I would like to rent a bicycle is [Ich möchte ein Fahrrad mieten] If you are renting something, it’s also important to know when you must return it. Therefore we are giving you a phrase you can use to make sure you return it on time. In German, when must I return it is [Wann muss ich es zurückgeben] Let’s break it down by syllable [Wann muss ich es zurückgeben] Now let’s hear it once again [Wann muss ich es zurückgeben] The first word [Wann] means when. Let’s break down this word and hear it one more time [Wann] And this is followed by [muss] which in English is must have to. It’s the first person singular form of helping verb [müssen] must have got to. Let’s break it down by syllable and hear it one more time [muss] Next word is [ich] which in English means I followed by s, it. It’s the personal pronoun, third singular person for neutral nouns and can be used in place of the vehicle. And then we have [zurückgeben] which means to return. [zurückgeben] So altogether we have [Wann muss ich es zurückgeben] Literally this means when must I return it and finally you may want to return it at a different location. In German, can I return it at [in] followed by the location is [Kann ich es in] location [zurückgeben] Let’s imagine you want to return it to Berlin. So we should have [Kann ich es in Berlin zurückgeben] Let’s break it down by syllable [Kann ich es in Berlin zurückgeben] Now let’s hear it once again [Kann] The first word [Kann] means can [Kann] And this is followed by [ich] which we have just seen and it means I and S which means it. Then we have [in] which literally means in but it will function as at here. Let’s take a look at the next word. It’s the location [Berlin] Berlin. Finally we have [zurückgeben] which in English is, to return. Let’s break down this word once again [zurückgeben] So altogether we have [Kann ich es in Berlin zurückgeben] Literally this means can I it in Berlin to return. One more note before the end of the lesson. Car rental places are easy to find all over Germany. Usually there are many close to major train stations in downtown areas and around airports. In Germany, you will also find many international car rental companies such as Europe car, [Sixt] and [Harz] while the prices may differ, the standard of the available cars is usually very high. You just need a credit card to rent a car online. If you ask for a car directly in the office, you might be able to pay cash but be aware of a service fee or deposit. |
