Ob aus Roggen oder Weizen, mit Leinsamen, Sonnenblumenkernen oder Mohn – in deutschen Bäckereien gibt es Brotlaibe in den verschiedensten Arten. Während viele Menschen zum Frühstück gerne die süße Variante mit Marmelade oder Nougatcreme (Nutella) essen, werden das Pausenbrot am Mittag oder das Abendbrot am Abend eher mit verschiedenen Wurst- und Käsesorten belegt. Außer dem dunklen Vollkornbrot sind in Deutschland auch Brötchen sehr beliebt. Vor allem beim gemütlichen Frühstück am Wochenende dürfen frische Brötchen vom Bäcker nicht fehlen. Doch aufgepasst! Die Zubereitung will gelernt sein. Meine Freundin Bianca hat mir letztens von einem japanischen Freund erzählt, der Brötchen statt waagerecht in zwei flache Hälften, senkrecht in der Mitte durchschnitt und sich dann wunderte, dass das Brötchen so schwer zu belegen war. Tja, so lecker Brötchen auch sind, so schwer kann es sein, ein Brötchen zu schmieren! Aber zugegeben, wir machen es anderen Nationen auch ganz schön schwer, wenn es um Brötchen geht. Das fängt beim Schneiden an und hört bei der Bezeichnung auf. Während der Berliner „Schrippe“ sagt, kauft man in Bayern „Semmeln“ und in Hessen „Wecken“. Kein Wunder, dass man da verwirrt ist! Und kein Wunder, dass andere Nationen die Deutschen für verrückt halten! Als ich in den USA gelebt habe, hatten meine amerikanischen Mitbewohner einen liebevollen Spitznamen für mich - "crazy German girl that eats too much bread"… Tja, was soll ich dazu sagen…Hallo alle zusammen, mein Name ist Sarah und ich bin brotsüchtig. ----Formal English---- What starts with "B" and can be found on German tables in the morning, around noon and in the evening? No! Not beer! Bread! Americans have cornflakes, Brits have sausages, and Germans have bread. Yes, we Germans are clearly the world champions of bread. Whether rye or wheat, with flaxseed, sunflower seeds or poppy seed - in German bakeries there are loafs of bread of many different types. While many people like to eat the sweet kind with jam or nougat creme (Nutella) for breakfast, the sandwich for lunch break or the bread for supper are rather topped with different types of lunchmeat or cheese. Apart from the dark wholemeal bread, rolls are also very popular in Germany. Fresh rolls from the baker especially must not be missing when you're having a nice comfy breakfast on the weekend. But beware! You have to master the preparation. My friend Bianca recently told me about a Japanese friend, who cut the roll vertically in the middle rather than horizontally in two flat halves, and was then surprised to find that it was difficult to put anything on the roll. Well, as yummy as rolls are, as difficult it can be to spread something on it! Though admittedly we aren't making it easy for other nations, when it comes to rolls. From the cutting to the term that is used for a roll, everything is difficult. While the Berliner calls it "Schrippe", you buy "Semmeln" in Bavaria, and "Wecken" in Hessia. No wonder people are confused! And no wonder that other nations think that Germans are crazy! When I lived in the USA, my American flatmates had an affectionate nickname for me - "crazy German girl that eats too much bread"... Well, what can I say... Und ich muss sagen, ich kann es nur jedem empfehlen! Die meisten Menschen heutzutage kennen Kegeln ja gar nicht mehr. Ãœberall wird nur noch Bowling auf super modernen Bahnen gespielt. Dabei hat Kegeln in Europa eine viel ältere Geschichte als Bowling. Es gibt Belege, dass schon im Mittelalter verschiedene Kegelspiele betrieben wurden. Auf vielen Volksfesten gab es Kegelbahnen und immer mehr Menschen schlossen sich zu Kegel-Clubs zusammen. Im Laufe der Jahrhunderte entwickelte sich Kegeln dann immer mehr zu einem Freizeitsport. Selbst Schiller und Goethe waren bekennende Kegel-Fans! Im 19. Jahrhundert wurde Kegeln dann immer ernsthafter betrieben und der sportliche Gedanke trat immer stärker in den Vordergrund. Mittlerweile werden in Deutschland jährlich Deutsche Meisterschaften im Wettkampfkegeln durchgeführt. Anders als beim Bowling müssen beim Kegeln nur neun Kegel umgeworfen werden. Die Kegel stehen dabei in der Form eines Quadrats, wobei eine Spitze nach vorne zeigt. Außerdem wirft man mit wesentlich kleineren Kugeln als beim Bowling und man hat nur einen Versuch, alle Kegel umzukegeln. Wirft man daneben und die Kugel landet in der Rille neben der Bahn, nennt man das eine Ratte. Aber, von dem Niveau der Wettkampfkegler sind meine Familie und ich natürlich weit entfernt. Uns geht es mehr um den Spaß an der ganzen Sache. Ob jetzt jemand alle neun Kegel weghaut oder eine Ratte wirft, ist bei uns so ziemlich egal. Außer natürlich, wenn wir in Teams gegeneinander spielen! Dann wird um jeden Punkt gekämpft. Am Wochenende haben wir mal wieder Männer gegen Frauen gespielt und dieses Mal mussten wir Frauen uns leider geschlagen geben! Aber auch wenn man nicht gewinnt, macht Kegeln eine Menge Spaß. Noch dazu hat man ich bisschen Bewegung und das ist ja immer gut! By this time, there were yearly German competitive bowling championships. In contrast with modern bowling, in this older form you had to knock down only nine pins. The pins stood in the shape of a square, with one corner facing forward. Besides that, you threw a substantially smaller ball than with modern bowling, and you only had one try to get all the pins down. If you missed and the ball landed in the gutter beside the lane, then that was called a "Rat". But my family and I are far from the level of the competitive bowlers. Irgendwo auf dem Weihnachtsmarkt steht auch immer eine Weihnachtskrippe, die Szenen aus der Weihnachtsgeschichte darstellt. Oder es gibt Weihnachtskonzerte und Krippenspiele werden aufgeführt. Auf Weihnachtsmärkten gibt es also mehr als Süßigkeiten und Verkaufsstände. Weihnachtsmärkte haben in Deutschland eine lange Tradition. Schon seit dem 15. Jahrhundert gibt es Weihnachtsmärkte. Je nach Region nennt man sie auch Christkindlmarkt, Adventmarkt oder Glühmarkt. Entstanden sind sie aus normalen Wochenmärkten, auf denen man Waren für den alltäglichen Gebrauch kaufen konnte, doch mit Wochenmärkten haben die heutigen Weihnachtsmärkte wenig gemeinsam. In vielen Städten in Deutschland stehen die Weihnachtsmärkte jedes Jahr an der gleichen Stelle und haben eine langjährige Tradition.
