A: Zeigst du mir jetzt endlich die Sehenswürdigkeiten?
A: Wir können jetzt sofort gehen.
A: S-Bahn? Laufen?

----Formal English----

D: Hey Mike, you've been here for a while now and you haven't seen much of Berlin yet! We have to change that!
A: Are you finally going to show me the sights?
D: Yes, today is a good day for that. The sun is shining and it is warm. When do you want to get going?
A: We can go now immediately.
D: Okay, then we shall take the lightrail now to Friedrichsstrasse and from there we can walk to the Brandenburg Gate and to the Bundestag.
A: Lightrail? Walk? Can't we take the car?
D: Taking the car into the city center? You must be crazy! First of all there are no parking spaces, and besides the whole center of Berlin is an environmental zone. My car is too old and must not go into the city center.
D: But it doesn't matter, we'll be faster by lightrail anyway.

----Formal ----

----Formal English----

Last Sunday the European election took place. People in all member states of the European Union were able to vote, which parties should represent them in the European Parliament.

There was a big selection. Firstly of course the big parties, which are also represented in the German national parliament – the social party (SPD), the christian democrats (CDU), the liberals (FDP), the greens (Grüne) and the leftists (Linke). Additionally you could also vote for 25 smaller parties, for example the women's party, the pirates' party or Christian parties. All in all it was a very long list.

In order to identify the party that best represents their interests, many Germans use the website www.wahlomat.de . There you can take a scientific test, indicating your opinion on many current issues. As a result you see which parties think the most like you and where your opinions differ. This makes it easier to vote for the right party.

After the votes from all over Europe are counted, the parties receive seats in the European parliament accordingly. For Germany and several other countries there is however the rule that a party needs to have receive at least 5% of votes in order to be represented in parliament. Very small parties therefore have less chances to send a delegate to the parliament in Strasbourg.

In order to make it even easier to govern in Strasbourg, national parties syndicate themselves into parliamentary groups. For example, there is a conservative group on European level called European People's Party (EEP), which consists of the German CDU, the Austrian ÖVP and yet other national conservative parties.

The European parliament has a growing influence on national laws in the EU, but voter turnout has been decreasing more and more. In 2009 only 42.5% of Germans and only 42.9% of Europeans went to vote.

A: I'll already improve my German, while my application is still being discussed.
D: That is a great idea! If you speak German very well, you will impress them in the job interview.

----Formal English----

The Ruhr area is a collection of cities in Western Germany, in North-Rhine Westphalia. Duisburg, Essen, Dortmund, Oberhausen, Bochum and several other big cities are part of this area. Because of the iron and coal mines and the steel industry many cities evolved close to each other. The quality of life was not so good there at first, even in the 50s the air was still full of soot and dust. Nowadays it is much better, but even then many people liked their home region. Here's a short literary text about this by Max von der Grün, titled „My city“.

The city, in which I live, is a dirty, a dusty city, but I like living here, because it gives me the opportunity to live in it anonymously and yet I can be one with it if I want to.

Outside the Ruhr area they talk a bit disparagingly about it, wrongly so, because these cities also have their own face, even if they may look the same to a stranger.

If I say cities on the Ruhr, then of course I mean the suburbs, where you may still find village life, as for example in my borough, where everybody knows everybody, where farmers have held their farms for centuries, where their cattle and sheep are grazing right up to the coke oven plant's fence.

Sometimes there is the smell of foul eggs, the industry's exhaust fumes are pressing up against the windows, you get used to it. And if the sun doesn't really shine on the clearest days, because the industry is pumping their waste into the sky between sun and humans, these are sunny days of a peculiar kind, the people here are more thankful for the rays of sun than elsewhere, and here you don't just need the hose to water the green, but also and especially in order to wash away the dust from shrubs and trees.

<itunes:summary>You have been staying with your family in Germany for about a week now. It's been wonderful...but what's that old saying about too much of a good thing? No one told you about separating the garbage, but apparently that is pretty important! Your aunt just came in the room and yelled in German, "Who put the food in the yellow sack?" You can't let someone else take the blame, so you shyly speak up to the angry German woman, "I put the food in the yellow sack, is that wrong?" Frustrated, she snaps back at you in German, "Pay more attention next time! The yellow sack is ONLY for packaging!" You apologize repeatedly and ask where to put the food. She huffs in frustration again and replies in German, "Put the food in the bio!" Wow! You won't make that mistake again!

After you eat, you suggest to your friends in German, "Let's sit outside in the cool weather and catch up." What a great idea! Your friends tell you they have an even better suggestion though! Although it seems as if the two of you have not stopped moving since you arrived, you still have so much you want to see and do while you are in Germany! However, when you woke up this morning rain was pouring down outside! Your friend told you in German, "I would have loved to have shown you more of Germany today...but the rain is going to keep us indoors!" Agreeing with your friend, you reply in German, "I would have loved to have seen more of Germany with you today!" But you both agree that it might be fun to just sit at home with some hot chocolate and reminisce. After chatting a while, your friend tells you in German, "We could have seen so many beautiful things today!" You explain to her in German, "I would never have had this much fun doing anything else!"

<itunes:summary>You moved to Germany about a month ago to manage the German office of your company. Your husband has been looking for a job since you arrived and is anxious to begin as well! But this weekend, you really just want to relax and have some fun...enjoy your new beautiful German hometown. You tell your husband in German, "I have never been more ready to have some fun!" Your ever-hesitant husband believes he should be a stick-in-the mud though and hang around your house all day! Trying to convince him otherwise, you tell him in German, "Okay, I am sure you will get a job in Germany more quickly by staying in the house all day!" He argues that he heard the weather will be bad today...he just doesn't want to get caught in the bad weather! "Oh sure," you tell him sarcastically in German, "I heard that tomorrow it will be much colder in East Germany, so we should definitely wait longer for that weather!"
