You are finally in Germany, and while others might be happy with "normal" sightseeing tours, you want to experience EVERYTHING Germany has to offer! On today's agenda - the zoo in Germany! You can't wait to see how different the zoo might be from the one back home you have seen since you were two. As you walk through the zoo, you overhear people chatting about the animals in German. A lady looking at the monkeys says excitedly in German, "Look honey! The monkeys are eating ants with a stick!" You rush over to the monkeys; you have only seen them use tools on TV! How exciting! Moments later, you hear a man telling his son in German, "Look at what that baby elephant is doing!" Excited to see something new again (and feeling a little like a kid again), you rush to the elephants where you see the baby throwing dirt all around him. How cute is that? Throughout the day, you witness amazing things from wild animals that you have never seen before! And none of this would be possible if you hadn't learned German. This was definitely a great idea! Good thing you came prepared! Learning German with GermanPod101.com is the most fun and effective way to learn German! This German Video Vocabulary lesson will teach you the German vocabulary to talk about safari animals. Whether it's to enrich your vacation or to tell the police where the black rhinoceros hit your car, this video lesson is sure to help you tame the wild beast...well, at least the vocabulary for it! In this German vocabulary video, you will learn German by watching the video, seeing both English and German translations describing the video, and all while listening to the German translations being read aloud by our native German speakers.

----Formal English----

Can we keep the hammer? What does a hammer have to do with punctual trains in Germany? Well, when it's winter, a lot.

It's generally known that in Germany, punctuality is still seen as a virtue, not a vice, and while train departure times in other countries seem to be a guideline (if anything), people usually expect and see quite strict adherence to the timetables in Germany. Usually.

I recently sat in a train going from Hannover to Berlin and could see how the train company tried in vain to meet the ideal of German punctuality. At each station, the conductor would say how many minutes late the train had already become: 2, 3, 5, 8...

After a few stations, the passengers had resigned themselves to the increasing delay, and longer stops in the train stations were not unusual. It only started getting unusual when, at one stop, a loud pounding came from the direction of the door and the train conductor announced that the continuation of the journey would be delayed because of icy doors. And it was very unusual, when a young woman in my train car suddenly produced a tool box from under her seat and rushed to the door. After a short time, one could hear a second pounding and finally the pleasant woosh of closing doors.

While the young woman earned applause as she returned with her toolbox to our train car, the locomotive driver jokingly asked over the loudspeaker, whether the conductor couldn't keep the young woman's hammer, as otherwise there would be none on the train!

And why am I telling you all this? Well, because we can learn two things from this train trip. Firstly, German punctuality is no longer what it once was, especially in winter. And secondly, when you lend your toolbox to the German train company, take care of your hammer!

Bayer: Und sind Sie früher schon einmal in Berlin gewesen?

Jones: I flew from New York to Munich three weeks ago. There I visited friends. And approximately a week ago I came to Berlin by train.

Bayer: Well, then you can discover a lot still!

<itunes:summary>Learn German with GermanPod101.com! After getting everything unpacked and moved in to your new home in Germany, you decide to tackle that yard. You spend all afternoon planting tons of flowers and even a small garden. And just in time, too - today, you have your five year old niece to watch. You follow her into the backyard as she runs out to play. First, she runs to a patch of flowers and yells back in German, "LOOOK! Bees are on the flowers!" Thinking she has been hurt or something is wrong, you run over to the patch of flowers and stare blankly into the beautiful blooms. Meanwhile, your niece has move on to bigger things - at the gate to the yard, she yells back in German, "OOOOHHH! An inchworm is on your fence!!" Trying desperately to keep up with her, she dashes off to your garden, yelling back in German, "The ladybugs are everywhere!" Realizing at this point that she is not hurt (just excited), you ask in your best German you can muster, "What are you so excited about honey? Please show me." She replies in German, "Ha ha! I know German better than you do!!!" Something tells you that you won't learn anything from her today! Bayer: Das ist Berliner Weiße mit Schuss.

Bayer: What would you like to drink?
Jones: Hmm, I don't know. What are you drinking? This looks interesting.

Lena: Here, keep the change (literally: it’s right so).
Michael: I had a cocktail Hawaii.
Kellnerin: That’s 4 Euros and 99 cents.
Michael: Make it 6 Euro.
Kellnerin: Thanks. Have a nice day!
Lena: Thank you. We’ll see each other at the picknick on Wednesday then.
Michael: Okay, see you on Wednesday!
Lena: Ciao!

----Formal English----

By now, there is no doubt – it is winter in Germany! Winter means cold, snow, scraping windshields and ... ice skating! Well, winter doesn't mean ice skating for everyone, but it always does for me!

I love to spend hours at the skating rink with my friends, because it brings back many memories from my youth, when I spent hours every day in the ice rink, practicing jumps, footwork, and spins. On the weekend, I drove to competitions throughout Germany, and in the summer months to Oberstdorf, a town known for its winter sports.

This was all years ago, but nonetheless my love of ice skating has stayed with me. Each winter I take out my old ice skates from the closet and look forward to hours on the ice. The creak of the blades as they leave their mark in the ice... the cold wind rushing by my face... how can anyone not love it?!

Many people look forward to Carnival in February, but this year I look forward to the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, where German figure skaters will compete, too. And even though Vancouver is far away and ice skating may not be as popular in Germany as in the USA or Canada, I will watch the competitions with interest in February. But it's a long time until then... enough time to go ice skating with friends! What will you do?

Jones: Ja, sehr gut. Was soll ich nun tun?
Bayer: Oh… nein, kein richtiger Affe natürlich. Klammeraffe ist ein anderes Wort für Tacker.
Jones: (lacht) Ah, okay, dann her mit dem Affen!

Bayer: So, have you entered all the customer data?
Jones: Yes, I'm done with that.
Bayer: Hmm, what task shall I give you next... What is your experience?
Jones: Well, lastly I worked in the marketing department of a small publishing-house. There I took care of the distribution of our magazines.
Bayer: Hmm. Actually, have you had a look at our new catalog? It would be best if you have a thoroughful look at our products first. Once you've informed yourself, I shall give you a new task.
Jones: Okay.
-
Jones: So, I'm done.
Bayer: Ah, nice. Did you manage with the German descriptions?
Jones: Yes, very well. What shall I do now?
Bayer: You can help me assemble these letters to our customers. In each envelope there will be a product catalog and these information sheets. Please always staple two of these sheets together with the "clinging-monkey".
Jones: Eh, with what kind of monkey?
Bayer: Oh... no, of course not a real monkey. "Clinging-monkey" is another word for a stapler.
Jones: (laughs) Ah, okay, then give me that monkey!

----Formal English----

Good resolutions for the new year

It's January and everybody talks about them (literally: they are in everyone's mouth). No, I don't mean the last christmas cookies - I talk of the good resolutions for the new year. No matter if on TV, on the radio, online or in magazines - everywhere people discuss the good old new year's resolutions. But why do we actually try to get rid of our bad habits again every year and to replace them with good behavior? Well, it's the Roman God's Janus' fault.

Janus is the God of the beginning and the end and he lend his name to the month of January. Janus is often shown as two-headed and he looks into the past and the future at the same time. This makes the month of January the optimal time to ponder the last months' successes and disappointments and to make new plans for the future.

A new beginning promises new luck and so at the beginning of the new year, people around the world resolve to do a lot of good things. Apart from eating more healthily, doing more sports and quitting smoking, less stress and spending more time with the family are also very popular resolutions.

I, too, have resolved to do a lot this year. And since you supposedly reach your goals more easily if you make them public, I thought I would do that right here: my goals for 2010 are to lose eight kilograms, to do sports three times a week, to save up money every week for a trip to the states and to read at least one book a week.

I know, I know - I've undertaken a lot. But fortunately I do still have almost 365 days to achieve everything! And what have you resolved to do in 2010?

Jones: Hmm. Ich möchte lieber etwas Warmes.
Bayer: Kein Problem.

Bayer: No problem. That is available over there.
Bayer: Today you can choose between spaghetti bolognese, stuffed peppers with rice and sauce, breaded schnitzel with fries and vegetarian lasagne.
Jones: Hmm. I think I will take a stuffed pepper with rice. And where are the drinks?
Bayer: Over there in front of the cashiers.
Bayer: There is a big selection of beverages. There is water, tea, coffee, lemonade, apple juice and even freshly squeezed orange juice.

<itunes:summary>Learn German with GermanPod101.com! Today is a beautiful day in Germany. You and your friends decide to make the most of it by walking through the park, enjoying the weather, and having an incredible lunch in the beautiful German outdoors. You have to wonder to yourself if it gets much better than this...until your friends begin smiling as they look at different things in the park, chatting in German about what they see. You can see them pointing at a small dog playing in the park...but what did they SAY? Obviously, they are enjoying his playfulness. It seems several other animals sitting nearby get their attention as well. As if they sense your confusion, they stop laughing and ask in German, "Is something wrong?" Dropping your head a little, you admit in German, "I can guess that you're talking about the animals...and you seem to be having so much fun...but what are you talking ABOUT?" Laughing, your friends reply in German, "Why didn't you say so?! We are laughing because the animals look like they are doing the same thing as us today - enjoying the day at the German park!" Auf Wiedersehen 2009! Willkommen 2010!

Frohes Neues Jahr!

----Formal English----

Goodbye 2009! Welcome 2010!

Anybody who has ever spent a traditional New Year's Eve in Germany knows that you can't get around two things: eating "Pfannkuchen" [Berlinian word for jelly donuts] and pouring lead to predict the future. While the former is a relatively simple affair - take a jelly donut in hand, open your mouth and enjoy yourself as you take a bite - the latter can be quite tricky.

Theoretically, you only have to take a small piece of lead, melt it on a spoon over a candle, then pour it into cold water and predict the events of the next year based on the resulting figurines. And since even the Romans already made use of this oracle custom in order to predict the outcome of wars and the duration of a reign, I thought that it shouldn't be too difficult.

However, this New Year's Eve made me change my opinion. While it was quite easy to unpack the melting spoon and the pieces of lead in the shapes of lucky charm pigs, horse-shoes and clovers, the melting was already considerably more difficult. The lead on my spoon obstinately refused. After ca. 5 minutes I got slight cramps in my arm and after 10 minutes I decided to try my luck with the small amount of molten lead on my spoon. Full of hope, I poured my lead into cold water and waited to see what it would prophesy for me.

Well - the interpretation of the result turned out to be just as tough as the melting process. While I was able to recognize a leaf of clover in that piece of lead, which would mean luck and happiness, my friend was of the opinion that it was a flower, which</itunes:summary>
