Are you comfortable pronouncing the German diphtongs AI, AU and EU? You may think you know them from English, but in fact there are subtle differences. If you don’t want to have an English accent in German, you better pronounce these diphtongs like a German would. Study this lesson to get a detailed introduction to the German diphtong vowels, including the 5 ways of spelling these 3 sounds.

It’s time for another pronunciation lesson again! This lesson will teach you how to pronounce the German E and I correctly. It’s not as easy as it sounds - these letters can actually represent 4 different German sounds, not counting short and long variations. If you are a native English speaker, chances are that you are not currently pronouncing these German sounds correctly, so use this podcast! And afterwards, don’t forget to practise. The GermanPod101.com Learning Center has all the tools you need to develop a perfect German accent.

German vowels are a major obstacle to native English speakers, if not so much to speakers of other languages. English vowels have shifted a lot compared to the vowels in most other European languages, or even languages as far as Swahili and Indonesian! So if you want to have a good accent in just about any language, you have to learn how to pronounce pure vowels. This lesson is the first step, dealing with German dark vowels (A, O and U) only. The next accent improvement lesson will continue from there.

GermanPod101’s Accent Improvement Series is aimed at German learners of all levels and all countries, but focussing particularly on English native speakers and their typical problems in German pronunciation.
