Learn German with GermanPod101.com! After finding out what your German friends like to do in their spare time, you have decided to try a new hobby yourself: tennis. You hire a German tennis coach to help you practice before you embarrass yourself in front of your friends that have been playing longer. After not being able to hit the tennis ball once in the first hour and looking quite grim, your German tennis coach asks you why you want to learn the sport of tennis. You explain in German, “I really like to play basketball, but my friend likes tennis, so I decided to try a new hobby while in Germany.” You can tell the German tennis coach would rather be spending his time with someone more…dedicated, but that’s what you’re paying him for, right?

Learn German with GermanPod101.com! It’s a nice, quiet night…perfect for cuddling on the couch and watching some German television together! But what are you going to watch? Your boyfriend has the remote and has been flipping through the channels for at least ten minutes. Finally, the flashing images (too fast for female eyes to see) come to a halt on…SOCCER?! You immediately demand in German, “I hate soccer!! Turn the channel!” Whimpering like a punished child, he cries in German, “But I LOVE soccer, honey…please?” Suddenly, not feeling so much in the cuddling mood, you scoot further away from your boyfriend and tell him in German, “I told you I hate soccer. It’s like romantic movies and comedies.” Acting for a moment as if he is going to stand up to you, he replies in German, “I would like one reason why I should turn the television.” Angrily you explain in German, “Do you like me?!”

In Germany there is a saying “Wenn einer einer Reise tut, dann kann er was erzählen.”, which basicly states the obvious observation “If you travel, there is a lot you can talk about afterward.” Everyone wants stories, a few nice words, knowledge where you have been and most importantly: what those places looked like. One of the easiest ways to meet all that at once is to send tons of postcards. In todays lesson John is going to do just that and we will accompany him to the post office. Not only is the the best place to buy stamps, there you will also learn the prices for sending postcards within Germany or to the US. And if a German post office is too far away for you: don’t worry. The numbers used in this lesson are the real prices you will have to pay for a postcard. Speaking of numbers: we will finally cover how to build numbers up to a few thousands. That is going to be even more useful than you think right now, because you need numbers everywhere! Understanding numbers is going to be aspecially useful when you are paying your bills. Whether you are buying a soda, paying for your room, for entrance fees or for you meal, it is going to pay to understand the numbers. And if you pay real close attention to todays lesson, you are going to find a number related mistake. But we won’t tell you where. You’ll have to find that one for yourself.

I’m sure you know the situation: you’re listening to the radio, or maybe you’re sitting in a café, and suddenly a song intrigues you. You have to find out what song it is, but who can you ask? This is exactly what happens to our two German protagonists, Lena and Michael. Today they are comparing musical tastes - do you think Lena will like Rammstein? Also, join us in discussing German music. This lesson’s cultural point gives you an overview of what German bands/singers might currently be worth checking out.
