Learn German with GermanPod101.com! You are supposed to meet up with some friends in Germany at a local German café but you hurt your ankle earlier in the week and cannot walk to it. You decide to take a taxi, considering it can pick you up right in front of your German hotel. The German hotel bellhop calls a taxi for you. You hop in the back of the taxi, but the German taxi driver tells you in German, “Come sit up front.” You get out of the back and sit up front. You are feeling a little awkward as this is not where you would sit back home…and you don’t really see the difference because there is no safety glass between the back and the front. But things are only about to get more uncomfortable…your German taxi driver is hollering at the cars that are holding up the traffic - well, it kind of reminds you of your own city. The German taxi driver begins to weave through the traffic at great speeds as he hollers for the other cars to move. Becoming somewhat worried, you tell the taxi driver in German, “Slow down. I’m not in any hurry.” The German taxi driver still barrels through traffic as you hold on to the dashboard. He pulls over in front of the German café, you hand him your money not expecting any change, and stumble out of the cab…just happy to be alive.

Learn German with GermanPod101.com! You are in Germany, working with a wonderful company and you are loving your new job! The only downside to the job is that sometimes you take your work home. This means that you need a high-tech computer to help you out along the way. You have bought one, brought one home, and hooked everything up. Too bad you don’t know why it won’t turn on! You have boxes all over your living room floor, your cat chasing (and probably eating) foam peanuts, and a hooked up computer that will not start! You call a friend that is a computer whiz and he is nice enough to come over. When he enters your home, he replies in German, “Don’t you know anything about German outlets? You have to be German to plug anything in and have it work.” He laughs at his joke, but you are baffled at the craziness of it all. You have hooked up several computers before and have no clue why this one won’t work. You reply to your friend in German, “I am having no luck with technology since I’ve been here in Germany. Did you know I hung up on a customer today at work?!” Your friend laughs again, walks over to the computer, looks to make sure everything is plugged in, and flips the ‘on’ switch. Your computer boots up immediately. He raises his eyebrows at you. You are so confused at what has happened, and yell, “I am waging war against all technology while I’m in Germany!” Time for a drink.

They now learned where you are from and they think you speak German pretty well considering you have not been in Germany long. When you ask one of your colleagues where he is from, he replies in German, “I am a Berliner.” You look at him oddly and reply in German, “I don’t get it. You are a jelly donut?” The table gets quiet and then everyone begins to laugh loudly. You are still befuddled and think your colleague is playing a joke on you. When your colleague finally calms down, he replies in German, “You must either be REALLY hungry, or you still need some serious practice with your German!!” By the end of the night, your German colleagues have given you the well-earned nickname of the “German jelly donut.” What a name to live up to!

Learn German with GermanPod101.com! You are in Germany on a business trip but have several friends that live there as well. After work one evening, you call one of your German friends to go out and have a drink. When you call him, you say in German, “You owe me a drink. Where do you want to meet up?” You set up the place that you want to meet at and begin to head there. As you arrive at the bar, you realize you are the first one to arrive. While waiting for your friend to show up, the bartender asks you what you would like to drink. You look a little distraught and ask in German, “What’s the house special?” The bartender gives you two choices, both you have never heard of. You are not sure what to get or what your friend will order. You tell the bartender that you will just wait until your friend arrives. When your friend arrives, you ask him in German, “What are you going to drink?” He smiles and orders for the both of you. Not knowing what to expect, and half-expecting your friend to play a joke on you since he’s buying, you are not quite surprised when the bartender hands you a green drink. Your friend seems to enjoy his drink so you try it yourself. Even if it is a joke, you need to show that you are not afraid of your German friend’s challenge. It’s a little odd at first, but deciding it’s not half-bad, you finish your drink and order another one, considering he’s buying, while talking about your hectic day at work.
