Within minutes, your friend quietly exclaims in German, “Be really still! Look, across that field…the deer are running and jumping…and the wolves over there are looking for food!” You strain your eyes trying to make out the images in the silvery sunlight, as if you knew what you were looking for. Again, he looks at you rolling his eyes and repeats what he said in English. Only this time, he adds, “I thought you said you learned German before you came here!” You snap back in German, “How was I supposed to know I was going to need to talk about animals in German?” Rolling his eyes once more and laughing, he replies in language, “This IS a vacation…isn’t it??” Learning German with GermanPod101.com is the most fun and effective way to learn German! The most popular German bands abroad are Rammstein and Tokio Hotel. Is it just a coincidence that these bands are nothing like ‘normal’ Germans? Or this all part of a sinister plot?

Be that as it may, this audio blog is a great place to get Sarah’s personal recommendations of German music. All GermanPod101 advanced audio blogs in season 3 feature authentic, natural German language and rich cultural information dressed in authentic stories taken from a typical German life. Don't forget to stop by GermanPod101.com for more great German Language Learning Resources! -------Lesson Dialog------- ----Formal ---- Deutsche Sprache – schwere Sprache? Quatsch! ----Formal English---- German language - difficult language? Nonsense! German language - beautiful language! So beautiful that in the last years more and more singers and bands have appeared who sing in German! In the 90s there were some bands like Fettes Brot and the Fantastischen Vier, who had a few successes, but the majority of songs on the radio was definitely sung in English. Now this has changed however. Some German bands and musicians have already been presented here at GermanPod101 in the Intermediate Music Lessons. And who do you find there as well? Rammstein! Well, there's no accounting for musical tastes, but... Rammstein? I don't want to step on anyone's toes, but maybe someone can explain to me why Rammstein is so well-known and popular outside of Germany? Is it the poetry of the texts and the optimistic melodies of the songs? And then... Tokio Hotel. Really? It seems that outside of Germany, the motto has prevailed that the crazier German bands are, the better they are! Crazy! Or is it part of a tactic to coddle up Germany's image abroad. Following the maxim "away from old German conventionality, to achieve a modern, flipped out image"? Well, don't think that I am against these bands that are a little bit flipped out... not at all! But... I just don't get it... Musicians like Herbert Grönemeyer, Clueso and Xavier Naidoo or German bands like Ich+Ich are more to my liking. They strike softer, less flipped out notes and are probably also travelling abroad on soft feet for this reason. But isn't it a pity?! Germany has a lot more to offer than bleak music and boys with weird hairdos! I'm starting a call to action; Give the average joe a chance! --------------------------- Learn German with GermanPod101! You have all exchanged phone numbers and have vowed to come back to Germany to visit longer next time. As the bus nears the airport, some of your friends have tears in their eyes. The bus pulls up to the German airport and you wait for the bus doors to open. One of your friends says in German, “Push the button.” You find the button, push it, and the doors swing open. You hear one of your friends call behind you, “Don’t forget to call. Have a safe trip home.” As you turn around to reply in German, “See you soon,” the bus doors swing shut and the bus races off. Learn German with GermanPod101.com! You learned a lot the last time you agreed to watch your niece…and this time, the joke’s on her. Yes, last time, she thought she was so smart because she knew the German names for so many insects in your garden. But she is only five years old, and you are pretty sure that you have her this time! You have a bug day planned - of gardening again. She loves it, and it is an excellent chance for you to show off your new German insect vocabulary that you have been practicing. As you follow her out into the flower garden, she looks back at you with those big patronizingly sweet eyes and says in German, “Look, what is this bug called?” Oh, she’s fast: she thinks you don’t know this answer. You kneel down next to her, sneer on your face, and reply sweetly in German, “Honey, that is a spider, and it looks like it’s protecting itself from you.” Astonished, she whips her head around to face you and replies with a simple, “Oh.” You point to another bug nearby and explain in German, “And look here, the cicadas are climbing up the tree.” She stares at you in disbelief and replies in German, “I don’t want to look at bugs any more, let’s go work in the garden!” Looks like you beat her at her own game AND get some help with that unruly garden too! ----Formal English---- There is a saying "Whoever wants to be pretty has to suffer". However I believe that this saying should go slightly differently. How? I'll tell you. I recently wanted to tour the Berlin cathedral with my friends and to climb up to the platform of the dome, which is 70 meters high. A friend had told me that the view from there is really beautiful, especially in the evenings, and that you could gape at the sparkling lights of Berlin from above. And she was right, the view is really impressive. But... there's a catch, and this catch is made of stone and has 270 stairs. I'm talking about the winding staircase leading up to the dome. At this point I have to admit that I suffer from mild fear of heights. And this fear of heights does not get better by standing on a narrow staircase with just a thin metal handrail protecting me from the depth and by having tons of people stand in line before me as well as behind me. In other words, once you're on the stairs, there is no turning back! And of course my friend the flight instinct makes himself known at such as time and screams from the bottom of his heard "Ruuuunnn!". How I would have loved to follow his advice and run up the stairs without looking back. But of course that wasn't possible. So I took a deep breath and tried to talk calmly to Mr flight instinct. I explained to him that we'd only have to calmly advance step by step, stair by stair, and we'd quickly arrive upstairs. However, he found that too boring, and so I left my flight instinct somewhere between stair no. 230 and 240 and continued on alone. And you wouldn't believe it, but I arrived safe and sound upstairs and when I stood in the dome of the cathedral, which is more than 100 years old, I knew; Whoever wants to see pretty things has to suffer! --------------------------- Learn German with GermanPod101! You find a cute German boutique that carries just your style of dress. As you walk into the boutique, a German sales associate approaches you and asks to assist you. You reply in German, “I am just looking.” The German associate walks off, but returns a moment later with two dresses, replying in German, “These would suit you well.” You hesitate because the dresses are not what you are looking for, but maybe the sales associate was just trying to be nice, so you take them. Finally finding a dress, you search for a dressing room, but while you are in there, she hands you two more dresses to try on! You thought salespeople back home were pushy! Wow.

You ask an attendant in German, “Excuse me. Do you have a water fountain nearby?” The attendant is happy to help you and replies in German, “No sir, we do not have a water fountain, but we do have a food court right down there,” pointing down a hall. “Great,” you mutter in English. After rushing to get to your gate, you definitely don’t want to leave. The German attendant must have heard the comment and replies to you in English, “We also have vending machines right over there.” Slightly embarrassed, you reply “Thank you” in German and rush off to get a drink. Although you don’t want to leave, you would rather be anywhere in the world than in this German airport.

----Formal English---- The Oscars are coming! On March 7th it will be time again and the popular trophies will be awarded in Los Angeles. Well okay, that's not earth-shattering and in the past few years I actually resisted this Hollywood hustle and bustle pretty well, but this year it could be different. Why? Well, the reason is 1.87 metres tall, has brown hair and brown eyes, speaks with a British accent and is called Colin Firth. In contrast to Meryl Streep, who is setting a new record this year with her 16th nomination, Colin Firth was nominated for the first time. It was about time! Ever since the BBC made a "Pride and Prejudice" TV series, he is THE Mr Darcy, and ever since "Love Actually" he is my absolutely favorite actor. Therefore I of course wish that he will get an Oscar for his role in "A Single Man". However he will have to prevail against Jeff Bridges, who is generally considered the favorite. And I believe that that will be very difficult, even for a Mr Darcy. In the event that it won't work out for Colin this year, I can hopefully still be happy for Meryl Streep. That is because she is also nominated for the best main role and her chances are supposedly a little better. If she wins this year, that would be her third Oscar, and she would be drawing close to Katharine Hepburn, who currently holds the record of the most awards, having four Academy Awards. Ah yes, America, land of statistics. But enough of figures and records. I am just looking forward to some entertaining hours and at least one good-looking Brit! And you? --------------------------- Learn German with GermanPod101! Don't forget to stop by GermanPod101.com for more great German Language Learning Resources! She approaches you and sternly says, “Do you think speaking that German will get you out of trouble? Was dann? ----Formal English---- Everybody knows it. You had a long work day or maybe you were out celebrating with friends in the evening and on the way home you're quickly overcome by hunger. What shall you do then? Nowadays many people go to a fast-food place or grab a doner kebab. But especially after a night of dancing I prefer a simple Currywurst (curry sausage) with fries! And who would have thought that you can learn so much about Currywurst at a fast-food stand at 2am!? For example, [you learn] that the Currywurst is a typical Berlin food. In 1949 the Berlin woman Herta Heuwer invented a special sauce based on tomato puree, curry, chili and other spices, which she called Chillup and sold along with a boiled sausage. That was the birth of the Berliner Currywurst. Herta Heuwer's sausage with curry sauce was so popular that a plaque was installed at the location of her former fast-food place in Kantstraße 101. Normally the Currywurst is always served with a slice of toast or with a roll, but I like it best with French fries. I think, if you want something hot and greasy, then you should go all the way! But it's a well-known fact that there's no accounting for taste, so there are different regional variations of the Currywurst. For example you can add roasted onions to the sauce or you can vary the type of curry. But no matter how you like your Currywurst, it is clear that this is part of the most well-known German dishes. You can even find it in German cafeterias. No wonder that every year around 800 million Currywurst are eaten in Germany. That's almost 10 per person! Well, I like Currywurst, but I can't eat 10 pieces a year! How'bout you? --------------------------- Learn German with GermanPod101! Learn German with GermanPod101.com! You are working in Germany - you may never get used to the open space around you. Your German office has no cubicles so you have absolutely no privacy. Everyone can see every little thing you do. If a customer is rude over the phone and you let it bother you, everyone will see. If you blow your nose, everyone will see. In fact, the only place you CAN get any privacy is when you are hiding out in the copy room! After lunch, you receive a personal call that has upset you - your mother has gone into the hospital. Attempting to pull yourself together at your desk - prying eyes all around - you decide need some privacy. You head to the copier room, the one place that you can have a moment to catch your breath. You let a few tears fall, but not for long. One of your German co-workers steps in, somewhat embarrassed when they realize something is wrong. He awkwardly explains in German, “I…uh…just need to make some copies….” You find yourself apologizing in German, “I’m sorry. There was nowhere else to go. I couldn’t handle any more phone calls or people staring at me.” Your German co-worker uncomfortably nods while backing out slowly. So much for privacy.

You and a few friends decide to go shopping one afternoon in an upscale German shopping center and everything seems way too fancy for you. You have tried on several dresses and nothing seems to suit you or your personality. The very stylish German associate comments on the dress, saying in German, “That looks very good on you. If you add a scarf, it will be perfect.” You blush and reply back in German, “I wish! All of you German ladies could pull this off way better than I could.” The German sales associate just walks away without saying anything else. One of your friends approaches you, laughing hysterically, and asks in German, “Maybe you should have just said ‘thank you’ instead of fishing for more compliments?” Looks like you’ll have to use your own judgment on this one!!

The size of the appropriate tip can be a really tricky question, especially since not all locals will agree on it. For example, in Germany there are some people that say that you shouldn’t tip at all if a restaurant bill already lists a service charge, or a line to the effect that service is included in the meal prices. Others however will say that tipping is still expected and not tipping is rude. So, which is it? And if you tip, how much is appropriate? Today Sarah will have a look at this subject and relate another personal experience. As usual, this GermanPod101 audioblog is completely in German, except for the vocabulary given at the end.

----Formal English---- Normally one would think that cultural differences disappear more and more because of globalisation. However then you notice that even two Western cultures like the German and the American one are still quite different. You do have to pay attention to some things to avoid misunderstandings. For example when it comes to the tip. Recently my friend Susannah from America was visiting me. We were eating out together and had a nice conversation. Finally it was time to pay. Since Susannah had been to Germany before, I assumed she knew how much of a tip you typically give. But while I gave the usual tip, she put a relatively high sum on the table. When we were outside, I asked her if the good restaurant or the good-looking waiter were the cause of her big tip. She just laughed and asked back, if I hadn't liked the restaurant. Of course I had liked it, the food was quite yummy, the waiter was nice, the atmosphere was relaxed... everything was good. Would I have given a tip otherwise? For just a second both of us were a bit puzzled. But then I had to laugh. It slowly dawned on me. Susannah didn't know that in Germany people give smaller tips than in the USA. In Germany, most prices already include a service fee, and the wage of a waiter is also higher in comparison to the wages in the USA, so that servers here don't depend as much on tips. Well, the end of the story is that Susannah fortunately doesn't consider me a stingy German. And I shall remember that even globalisation doesn't seem to make certain differences disappear. Just ask the German waiters! --------------------------- Learn German with GermanPod101! Don't forget to stop by GermanPod101.com for more great German Language Learning Resources! Learn German with GermanPod101.com! You are working your tail off on a work-study program in Germany. School is fun and you are learning a lot at the German university, but when you go to work, you are on the telephone for long periods of time and people really don’t like being disturbed during dinnertime. Going to work seems to start off okay most days, but then it becomes frustrating. You make the first few calls, and if you are lucky, people won’t hang up on you. Then, some people get irate with you, wondering why you are interrupting dinner. And to top it off, today you had five automated messages in a row, which just makes more paperwork for you to do. You finally get a live person on your sixth try and say in German, “Hello. I wanted to speak with the man of the house.” The voice on the other end replies in German, “My dad has been gone for three hours. Call back later.” You tell the child thank you, hang up, and become frustrated. You are never going to make commission if you can’t speak to anyone! The next three calls don’t work any better. You slam the phone down in the cradle as another German phone representative walks up to you and replies in German, “Has this been a rough day?” You start telling him everything that is wrong, venting in German, “I didn’t know this was the German telephone job from hell!” Laughing, he explains in German, “Because you are new, they have given you an old German directory with outdated numbers. Just have to hang in there until someone new starts and then you will be given an updated version.” Now it all makes sense…but it doesn’t change your opinion about the job.
