Alle Nationen, die in einem engen Kontakt mit anderen Nationen stehen, tauschen üblicherweise Wörter miteinander aus. So gibt es den „Kindergarden“ in den USA, das „week-end“ in Frankreich und den „Cuisinier“ in Deutschland. Solche Veränderungen sind ein Teil des kulturellen und sozialen Miteinanders unterschiedlicher Nationen und sollten nicht zu negativ gesehen werden. In den letzten Jahren aber (hauptsächlich seitdem das Internet sich ausgebreitet und eine „Sprachglobalisierung“ eingeleitet hat) macht sich ein neuartiger Trend bemerkbar, der von vielen Menschen abwertend als „Denglisch“ bezeichnet wird. Denglisch ist eine Kombination aus den Wörtern Deutsch und Englisch. Denglisch bezeichnet die Vermengung dieser beiden Sprachen. Das soll bedeuten, dass die Menschen zwischen deutschen und englischen Wörtern, Grammatik und Syntax oftmals hin und her wechseln, wie es ihnen beliebt. Englische Wörter werden auf einmal gebeugt wie deutsche Wörter: „Das ist eine stylishe Jacke.“ Oder: „Das ist ein stranger Film.“ Was ebenfalls viele Menschen stört, ist die falsche deutsche Grammatik, die bei wortwörtlichen Übersetzungen von englischen Ausdrücken entsteht. Der immer wieder zitierte Klassiker ist: „Das macht Sinn.“ Englisch: „It makes sense.“ Das macht Sinn ist allerdings streng genommen falsch und müsste heißen „Das hat Sinn.“ („It has sense.“). Besonders kurios wird es aber, wenn englische Begriffe von Deutschen erschaffen werden. Begriffe, die es vorher auf Englisch gar nicht gab. So zum Beispiel die Wörter „Handy“ oder „Oldtimer“. Diese Wörter wurden von Deutschen erfunden. Das wichtigste Kriterium einer Sprache ist eigentlich ihre Verständlichkeit. Solange sich zwei Menschen miteinander verständigen können, ist der Sinn und Zweck von Sprache erfüllt. Und trotzdem ist eine unbedachte Durchmischung von Sprachen nicht besonders schön. Es lohnt sich deswegen auf jeden Fall, wenn man sich ein wenig Mühe macht, um die Sprachen auseinander zu halten. Selbst wenn es nur für einen guten Eindruck bei den Mitmenschen ist. Today we'll cover the city of Constance, situated at Lake Constance. This is one of not too many German cities whose oldtown remained mostly intact after the second world war; a great place to enjoy the <i>Fachwerkhäuser</i> and old architecture. Ready to take a trip? Konstanz: An der westlichen Spitze des Bodensees, der von Deutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz umrandet wird, liegt die Stadt Konstanz. Mit ein wenig über 80.000 Einwohnern ist sie die größte Stadt am Bodensee. Sie gehört zum Bundesland Baden-Württemberg. Konstanz ist eine sehr alte und schöne Stadt, da sie im zweiten Weltkrieg fast keinen Angriffen zum Opfer fiel. Sie hatte keine strategische, militärische Bedeutung und blieb daher von den Bombenangriffen der Alliierten verschont. 1945 nahmen französische Truppen die Stadt ein, fast ohne eine einzigen Schuss abzufeuern. Aus diesem Grunde stehen auch heute noch viele deutsche Fachwerkhäuser in der wunderschönen Altstadt im Zentrum von Konstanz. Die Altstadt ist mit ihren vielen schmalen Gassen und Geschäften wirklich sehenswert. Berühmt ist Konstanz auch wegen des Konzils, das von 1414 bis 1418 dort stattfand. Ein Konzil ist eine kirchliche Versammlung, zu der alle Bischöfe und der Papst der katholischen Kirche zusammen kommen. Es gab nur ein einziges Konzil auf deutschem Boden, das ausgerichtet wurde, um einen neuen Papst zu wählen. Dieses Konzil war das Konstanzer Konzil. Das Gebäude in dem die Wahl durchgeführt wurde, steht immer noch in Konstanz und wird immer noch für verschiedene Veranstaltungen genutzt. Im Konstanzer Hafen findet man eine große Skulptur, die Imperia heißt und von dem lokalen Künstler Peter Lenk erschaffen wurde. Die Skulptur symbolisiert eine Kurtisane, die einen Papst und einen König in ihren Händen trägt. Das soll eine Anspielung auf das Konstanzer Konzil sein. Denn zu keiner anderen Zeit in der Geschichte von Konstanz lebten dort mehr Kurtisanen, als zu der Zeit des Konzils. Das Konzil wurde buchstäblich getragen von den Kurtisanen. Die Imperia ist ebenso bekannt wie umstritten. Aber trotzdem eine der beliebtesten Konstanzer Sehenswürdigkeiten, die auf keinen Ansichtskarten fehlen darf. Im Jahre 2003 wurden bei Ausgrabungen vor dem Konstanzer Münster Überreste eines römischen Kastells entdeckt. Diese Ausgrabungen machten die Stadt zu einer der ältesten römischen Städte am Bodensee. Zudem nimmt man an, dass die Stadt ihren Namen vom römischen Kaiser Constantius Chlorus hat. Von den Sehenswürdigkeiten und der langen Stadtgeschichte abgesehen, ist Konstanz aber auch für seine Universität berühmt. Die Universität in Konstanz ist zwar noch sehr jung, denn sie wurde erst 1966 gegründet, dennoch gehört sie zu den besten Universitäten Deutschlands. Sie ist sogar eine offizielle Eliteuniversität. Eine große deutsche Zeitung nannte die Universität sogar schon: „Das Princeton vom Bodensee.“ Mit nur knapp 10.000 Studenten ist sie zudem eine sehr kleine Universität. In jedem Fall blickt die Stadt Konstanz auf eine lange Geschichte zurück. Das macht sie für geschichtsbegeisterte Menschen interessant. Das schönste an Konstanz aber ist und bleibt der Bodensee. Das Schwäbische Meer ist allerdings kein richtiges Meer, sondern der drittgrößte Süßwassersee in Mitteleuropa, nämlich der Bodensee. Der Bodensee besteht genauer gesagt aus drei Teilen, dem Obersee, dem Untersee und dem Seerhein. Ganz ähnlich den Großen Seen zwischen den USA und Kanada. Nimmt man alle drei Teile zusammen, hat der See eine Fläche von über 530 km², ist 63 km lang und an der breitesten Stelle liegen die Ufer 14 km auseinander. Er ist so lang, dass sich sogar die Erdkrümmung bemerkbar macht. Wenn man zum Beispiel im Westen am Ufer der Stadt Konstanz steht und auf die andere Seite des Sees in Richtung der Stadt Bregenz blickt, so wird man auch an einem klaren Tag nichts außer Wasser sehen, denn die Erdkrümmung verhindert die Sicht. Auf der österreichischen Seite, ganz in der Nähe von Bregenz, fließt der Fluss Rhein in den Bodensee. Der Rheins, dessen Ursprünge in den schweizerischen Alpen liegen, durchströmt den Bodensee hindurch, tritt auf der anderen Seite wieder aus und nimmt danach seinen Weg über einen weiten Teil als Grenzfluss zwischen Frankreich und Deutschland, bis er dann schlussendlich in den Niederlanden in die Nordsee mündet. Da der Bodensee als Wärmespeicher wirkt, ist die Region um ihn herum ein sehr fruchtbares Gebiet. Viele Obst- und Gemüseplantagen gibt es hier und der hiesige Wein ist für seinen Geschmack berühmt. Es ist also nicht überraschend, wie die beiden Inseln heißen, die im Bodensee liegen. Die Insel „Reichenau“ ist als Gemüseinsel bekannt und die Insel „Mainau“ als Blumeninsel. Die fruchtbare Natur macht die Ernten ertragreich, weshalb der Bodensee seit jeher als Wohnort für Menschen beliebt ist. Die älteste Siedlung am See datiert bis in das Jahr 4000 vor Christus zurück und kann als eine Rekonstruktion eines Museums in Unteruhldingen besichtigt werden. Der Bodensee bietet auch viele Möglichkeiten für Wassersportarten. An schönen Tagen im Sommer segeln gewöhnlich hunderte Segelboote auf dem See. Doch dort zu segeln ist nicht ganz ungefährlich. Die Wetterverhältnisse sind unbeständig und deshalb unberechenbar. Aus diesem Grund muss man einen speziellen Segelschein machen, der nur für den Bodensee gilt. Es kommt immer wieder vor, dass Menschen das Wetter auf dem See unterschätzen und dann in Seenot geraten. Im Winter herrscht um den See herum oft Nebel, was manchmal ganz schön unangenehm für die Anwohner sein kann. Alles ist dann grau in grau. Der Sommer aber macht das alles dann wieder gut. In jedem Fall gehört der Bodensee zu den schönsten Flecken Süddeutschlands. German text: Seit die Europäer im 16 Jh. Nordamerika entdeckten, wanderten viele von ihnen in die Neue Welt aus, um dort ein neues Leben zu beginnen. Unter den vielen europäischen Auswanderern waren natürlich auch viele Deutsche, was dazu führte, dass die amerikanische Kultur heute vielerlei deutsche Einflüsse und Färbungen hat. Nach einer Schätzung haben über 50 Millionen US-Amerikaner deutsche Vorfahren. Die deutschen Wurzeln erkennt man zum Beispiel an Namen verschiedener amerikanischer Speisen: Frankfurter, Hamburger, Brezeln und Strudel sind bekannte deutsche Begriffe. Auch Städtenamen kamen mit den Auswanderern ins Land: Hamburg in New York, New Berlin in Illinois oder Dresden in Ohio sind nur wenige Beispiele. In den Jahren zwischen 1848 und dem ersten Weltkrieg gab es die größte Auswanderungswelle von Deutschen nach Amerika. Während der Zeit des ersten Weltkrieges assimilierten sich viele Deutsche, um nicht als Sympathisanten mit den deutschen Gegnern zu erscheinen. Deutschunterricht wurde verboten und deutsche Speisen und Namen wurden sprachlich amerikanisiert. So wurde Sauerkraut zu Liberty Cabbage. (Ganz ähnlich der temporären Umbenennung von French Fries zu Freedom Fries im Jahr 2003.) Und der Name Schmidt wurde Smith. Während des zweiten Weltkrieges gab es eine erneute Welle deutscher Auswanderer. Dieses Mal aber flohen die Auswanderer vor der Gewalt der Nationalsozialisten und fanden in den Vereinigten Staaten politisches Asyl. Unter diesen Migranten befanden sich unter anderen der Physiker Albert Einstein, die Schauspielerin Marlene Dietrich, der Maler Max Beckmann und, später, der Raketenforscher Wernher von Braun. Von Braun war mit verantwortlich für die Mondlandung der Amerikaner im Jahr 1969. Es ist also gar nicht überraschend, dass zwei US-Präsidenten deutsche Eltern hatten. Präsident Hoover und Präsident Eisenhower. Durch die vielen kulturellen Gemeinsamkeiten erwuchs zwischen den USA und Deutschland ein enges Bündnis, auch wenn es durch die beiden Weltkriege und auch mancher Meinungsverschiedenheit zu Spannungen kam, wie es zum Beispiel im Frühjahr 2003 der Fall war, als der Bundeskanzler Gerhard Schröder den Amerikanern die Unterstützung im Irakkrieg verweigerte. Heute aber befinden sich die bilateralen Beziehungen der beiden Länder in bester Form. Es wäre auch enttäuschend, wenn dies nicht der Fall wäre. So gelten doch immerhin 23 von den 50 Bundesstaaten der USA als mehrheitlich deutschstämmig. Das sollte die Amerikaner und die Deutschen auf jeden Fall miteinander verbinden. Hoffentlich bleibt diese Verbindung der Wurzeln für immer bestehen.
