Learn German with GermanPod101.com! Studying abroad in Germany, you have seen wonderful German places, and met exciting people, but you are tired from all the effort you have put into your work. You decide to go out on the town in the German city to relax. Ending up at a café that German students regularly hang out at, you expect to see students that you know from school, but to your surprise, you know absolutely no one. In fact, this café doesn’t seem to be students at all, but just locals hanging out. But, you are here so you might as well try to enjoy yourself. You sit down close to a group of German people that appear to be your age. Since your classmates prefer to practice their English with a native English speaker, you opt for saying in English, “Hi. This seems to be the hangout to be at. What else is there to do in the city?” They all stop talking and look at you with their faces drawn. Do you have bad breath or something?  You then say in English, “Sorry I interrupted.” Once again, they say nothing and look somewhat confused. Another person approaches the table and replies in English, “Excuse me. I don’t mean to eavesdrop, but they probably don’t speak English. You must be from the university where many speak English, but with them, you might as well be speaking Klingon.” Blushing, you reply in German, “Thanks. Sometimes I feel like I’m speaking Klingon because my German is so rough.” Obviously, the group understands that, because they begin to laugh. But on the flip side, they ask you to stay and carry on a German conversation, not a Klingon one.
