Learn German with GermanPod101.com! It’s a nice, quiet night…perfect for cuddling on the couch and watching some German television together! But what are you going to watch? Your boyfriend has the remote and has been flipping through the channels for at least ten minutes. Finally, the flashing images (too fast for female eyes to see) come to a halt on…SOCCER?! You immediately demand in German, “I hate soccer!! Turn the channel!” Whimpering like a punished child, he cries in German, “But I LOVE soccer, honey…please?” Suddenly, not feeling so much in the cuddling mood, you scoot further away from your boyfriend and tell him in German, “I told you I hate soccer. It’s like romantic movies and comedies.” Acting for a moment as if he is going to stand up to you, he replies in German, “I would like one reason why I should turn the television.” Angrily you explain in German, “Do you like me?!”

Ja, ich mag fussball, aber die spieler unser mannschaft hier in Wiesbaden sind babys!! Alle 5 minuten sie verletzten sich und schreien. (Please feel free to correct my poor German!)

Ubrigens, was ist der unterschied zwischen “kriegen” und “bekommen.” Beide bedeuten “to get/to receive,” oder?

Vielen dank fur Ihre hilfe!

Hallo Karen,
ja beide bedeuten to get/to receive, beachte diese ebene:

1- kriegen –> umgangssprache (colloquial)
2- bekommen –> neutral
3- erhalten –> sehr formal

As a young boy growing up in Vancouver, Canada, soccer has never been all that popular a sport with the locals. I think that is changing with the younger generation taking a much greater interest. I would say the primary sports here are hockey, North American football, and perhaps baseball. Of course, what we call football is not to be confused with soccer because it is rather more like rugby. Depending on Chuck’s age he might remember the now defunct North American Soccer league. There was a lot of excitment back then in Vancouver because our team the Vancouver Whitecaps beat the New York Cosmos for the NASL championship. They were very popular and had a big following with a victory parade through the streets. Also they had a real catchy theme song. I still remember the American announcers refering to our city as the VILLAGE of Vancouver. Grant you, we certainly weren’t as large as New York but we were hardly a village, being Canada’s third largest city . Unfortunatly after that the popularity of the game seem to decline.

Thank you Ashkan for your explanation (re: bekommen/kriegen)! Great advice — learning colloquial talk vs. formal talk is not often learned from a textbook … very helpful!
