In English class we would always say “hä?” because we didn’t understand what she was saying. And one time she cracked and screamed at us: Das heißt nicht “hä?” sondern “wie bitte?”

Hi,
the translation for ‘That was just a joke.’ is ‘Das war nur ein Witz.’ instead of ‘Das war nur ein Sherz.’ I guess there are synonyms…

Yes, “Witz” and “Scherz” are synonyms.
You can use them as you like.
They also share the same masculine gender:
