How many famous German authors can you name? Whose books have you read?

Thank you so much for the great blog ! In my last year in highschool, my german teacher made us study a lot of german literature, and we read “Effi Briest” by Fontane, among others. It was the best year I had studying the language !

I’ve long wanted to read “Buddenbrooks” and “Die Zauberberg” too. I should probably try this summer !

You know, if you actually make your way through both of these Mann books you will probably earn the respect of many Germans, too. Seriously: I am German, I love to read, but I just don’t get the hype about this entire family (to put it mildly). Many people I know don’t get it either.
Personally I am considering reading the Magic Mountain too, only… the product description on Amazon.de doesn’t sound all that tempting:
“Die erste magische Leistung besteht darin, eine Handlung, die in einem Satz zusammengefaßt werden kann, auf 1.000 Seiten zu packen: Der junge Hamburger Hans Castorp, Sproß einer Patrizierfamilie lebt bis zum Ausbruch des ersten Weltkriegs sieben Jahre in einem Schweizer Luxussanatorium für Lungenkranke, ohne selbst krank zu sein.”
So, yeah, considering to read a story that can be told in one sentence but happens to be 1.000 pages long, kinda sound masochistic to me…

However:
While I am not a really big fan of that family, my personal favorit is Klaus. Thomas just drags on endlessly and I never read Erika or Heinrich. But Klaus Mann is really good. “Mephisto” and “Der Wendepunkt” were both rather enjoyable.
And:
I don’t think I found his name on some of these “xxx best books you just need to read in order for your life to have had any meaning at all.”-lists yet.
Thomas Mann won’t run away. And Klaus is way less frustrating. ^_~
Just my personal recommandation. ^^’
