One of the most rewarding things to do in a foreign language is to listen to their comedians / satirists. Unfortunately, this is also one of the hardest things to do as a non-native speaker. Plays on words, comic usage of words in the wrong context and cultural references all require true mastery of a language. However, if you managed to achieve this level in German, you should definitely listen to Michael Mittermeier some time. He is really funny, and this audio blog is dedicated to him.

Who are your favorite comedians? In German it would be Michael Mittermeier for me, and in English Stephen Colbert.

“Revanchieren” is very interesting…. I thought at first it meant the exact opposite of “to return the favor”. It looks a lot like the french word “revanche” wich means “revenge”… I thought “revanchieren” meant to “take revenge on”… :???:

Ich bin darauf nicht stolz, aber ich muß sagen, daß ich über Michael Mittermeier nie gehört habe. Was für ein Comedian ist er ? Hat er in berühmten Filme gespielt ?

*grrr*
This page just ate my comment… >_>

Anyway, here we go again, this time likely way shorter:
As far as I know Mittermeier never stared in a movie. He is a famous stand up comedian who is filling really hugh theaters by now. Among them the “Zirkus Krone”, which can house a few thousand people.

Mittermeier himself is rather lively, jumping back and forth, switching rolls, taking up the entire stage while bumping around.

And for some reasons he just made it. He is frequently appearing on popular Comedy shows on TV like “Quatsch Comedy Club”, is currently touring Germany, Austria and Zwitzerland with his fourth programm, he was one of the first whoms programm was broadcasted on TV, he did a music CD “Mittermeier and Friends”, staring his wife, The Guano Apes, Reamonn and Xavier Naidoo(!) among others.
He also was a Support Act for U2 and a headliner (!) for “Rock am Ring/ Rock im Park”. (That would be the biggest Rock festival in entire Germany, taking place in two different locations, open air, staring bands from all over the world)
His first programm just hit a nerve and people still like him.

While his programm is rather colloquial and nothing quiet reached his first show, he is still popular and people love him.
To get an inside into his humor you might want to check this one out:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZYJis5kK-Y
It’s completely in English, kinda like a Best of from his New York tour.

And should this hit your fancy you might want to think about getting his Paranoid programm. Like I said, it’s not as good as “Zapped” (a TV junky presenting his addiction), but the DVD is not only Code Free, but also comes with English Subtitles. And: you get tons of Bonus material. At least in the 2 DVD version. (I’m not sure, but there should also be a 1 DVD version by now…)
Otherwise you can find a lot of his scetches on Youtube.

And if you like German comedy I highly suggest looking for Volker Pispers on Youtube. There should be one or two of his clips with subtitles too. Pispers is different. He plays a lot with the German language, twisting it, turning it into something else to suit his humor, but he is really great.

Well, now I rather press Submit, and hope it doesn’t eat my comment this time…
